Biggest scam you didn’t know was a scam

Lighthearted 😂
I saw an Instagram post earlier about the biggest thing you don’t realise is a scam and we all accept as normal.
We all have stories about how our parents raised 7 kids etc in a 3 bed if they were lucky, my grandparents had 9 in a 2 bed 😂
the aim for everyone now is buying or building massive houses, 3 en suites at least, we spend the weekends in Ikea, home bargain etc buying shit we don’t need and cleaning the houses with the 4 bathrooms!
I swear I’ve spent more Time cleaning the legs of chairs than is reasonable and I seem to wash the walls of my bathroom far more than people ever mentioned.
I don’t remember my mother ever cleaning the panelling on the walls.
is it all a scam? Are we busy fools?
sometimes I got to centre Parcs like places and think how simple my life would be if we al only had one suitcase each

OP posts:

I don’t think it’s the size of the house, more all of the stuff we have in them. Realistically how long would it take to clean an empty room?
Take handbags as an example. As a young woman I had a smart leather one for work, a canvas one for casual and a little clutch for going out. I used them until they wore out then replaced them.
Now I must have about 20 bags taking up space, collecting dust etc so cleaning takes much longer.
Perhaps I need to get off MN and start decluttering.

I didn't know anybody cleaned their handbags. I'm middle aged and still only have one handbag. I have loads of hold all type bags and they do look a bit messy at the bottom of the wardrobe, but I don't have to dust them or anything...

Ironing is a scam. Waste of life and electricity. Low spin. Shake it dry. Absolutely fine.

I disagree there. It's also the least boring housework task because you can watch telly at the same time.

Ahsheeit · 16/03/2025 10:29

General social expectations, such as going to events to show your face, or being married/needing a partner to be fulfilled and happy. Pleasing others to your own detriment.

Fuck that shit. Found that I'm much happier following my own path.

Discsareshit · 16/03/2025 10:29

Was just coming on here to say that.

I think it depends on the type of chair. Wooden, no need, but I have plastic outdoor chairs inside (yes, I know that's ugly).

What kind of events are you expected at?

I can honestly say I have never cleaned a chair leg in my life, or considered that any could get dirty enough to require it. Someone has definitely scammed you into unnecessary cleaning!

You don’t have dogs then ? And messy children.

Discsareshit · 16/03/2025 10:31

HellDorado · 16/03/2025 10:14

Monogamy. Why does having a long-term connection with someone, who you can be very happy with, mean desperately trying to make sex with them exciting for the rest of your life (or until something dries up or drops off)?

What's the alternative? Do you want to live with your dh and his favourite wife? Do you want only short relationships?

offmynut · 16/03/2025 10:32

Having kids.
Marriage.
Covid.

  • Slimming world/weight watchers/slimfast et al. Yes, they work in the short term but encourage a disordered relationship with food. (I know, I've tried em and struggled all my life)
  • Car finance
  • MLM's
  • Cleaning products/softeners/laundry steriliser ect and the huge marketing behind it. In reality you don't need much to clean. I use washing up liquid, ciff/jiff, cheap disinfectant and cheap wash powder for pretty much everything.

What's your alternative to slimming clubs?

FamiChiki · 16/03/2025 10:35

Ooh OP it sounds like you're spiritually ready for a minimal lifestyle 😍

Watch a few episodes of Sort Your Life Out, create a capsule wardrobe, ruthlessly donate and get rid of literally every single thing that you do not either need or love.. It's life changing in the best ways.

I'm counting down the years til I can get a smaller house. I am seriously done with cleaning, and previously crammed spaces which are now echoey spaces are used very seldom in my house. I can't wait to have a small snug house with just what I need and no more.

Handbags. I've just never....got it? I have a phone, maybe some tissues and a lip balm. They all go in my pocket. I can't be doing with a bag swinging about, knocking stuff around and having to have it in my hand or on my arm or on my shoulder and find somewhere safe to put it when I sit down...

Everything I need is on my phone or in my pocket. Car keys in a different pocket. This is why I tend to buy men's jackets with zip up pockets (and the REAL scam is why do women's clothes have teeny tiny little insecure pockets?)

The only time you need a handbag is when you have small children who need a huge amount of equipment and stuff (and even then most of it goes under the buggy). Pockets Not Handbags. That's my new slogan.

This is me! I buy ski jackets for the same reason.

I can't be faffed with a hand bag. The soze of pockets in women's clothes are a scam and I have a small bum bag for when it's too warm for a jacket.. a portable pocket, if you will.

Ironing ...haven't owned an ironing board for 15 years. The iron comes out for court, weddings and funerals, towel on the table , job done.

My Ex MIL must have wasted half her life ironing sheets and tea towels; f&&k that for a game!

Calorie counting and for me, mounjaro. Though I fully appreciate I am fortunate to be able to afford it.

Shopgirl1 · 16/03/2025 10:42

Airlines making people think it’s reasonable to charge extra to book seats beside the people you booked the ticket with, in particular children. Charging extra for particular seats is a huge money making racket for airlines and leads to all kinds of arguments between passengers. Airlines laughing all the way to the bank.

I agree. I don't mind ironing, plus I wear mostly natural fibres and don't like the creased look.

Being an adult, why did grown ups sell it as a really exciting thing?!

Very true. I spend my time off cycling and swimming in rivers, just to get that feeling of freedom I had as a child. If I see a climbable tree, I’m up that too.

HellDorado · 16/03/2025 10:48

Discsareshit · 16/03/2025 10:31

Did I say any of that? I actually said the opposite.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that lifelong sexual fidelity is the only way to have a long-term relationship. So why do so many people have affairs? Take monogamy out of the equation and the desire to have sex with someone else is no longer a relationship killer.

EDIT: Oh, I see you’re just arguing with everyone.

So...how does everything get funded then?

mamaduckbone · 16/03/2025 10:53

All the billions of things that we are now supposed to celebrate / document / spend money on / post on social media:
Elf on the shelf, Christmas Eve boxes, buying your children things for Valentine's Day, gender reveals, baby showers, etc etc etc...

@Fairyliz no need to get off MN, we have a long running decluttering thread on here 😄

Could you please post it here? I need to get a grip for myself

the80sweregreat · 16/03/2025 10:53

I agree that theme parks are a rip off, yet even with discounts and money off vouchers it still cost a fortune and as the children got older I gave up going to them.
service stations and the like that charge more for food than their normal places do.
car parking fees just about everywhere.
just how many rules there are for just about everything we do!

University. Many (most?) are a money making racket with far too many staff being paid inflated salaries to do very little. This is not just true in the UK - its even worse over here in Australia. Meanwhile students end up in thousands of dollars worth of debt. The reality is, for many course, they could learn most of the same material by watching videos online. Most of them almost never go in to the actual uni anyway. Its a total con job for a lot of them.
