Camila/Camilla

Hi everyone, we are due to have our baby girl soon and love the name Camila (pronounced Ca-me-la). However to those I have mentioned the name to, some have mispronounced it as Camilla (Ca-mill-a).

i wanted to see if this is how most people would pronounce Camila. I love the name but don’t love the idea of my daughter correcting people on the pronunciation.

thanks in advance!

Sorry but I would just assume it was a "unique" spelling of Camilla.

Ddakji · 15/03/2025 23:22

Well - I suppose I would think it was Camilla spelt wrongly. Sorry!

I definitely wouldn’t think it was pronounced Ca-me-la.

Same.

I would prn Camilla and have to blink at the correction.

CarrieOnComplaining · 15/03/2025 23:25

I would assume that was a mis spelling of Camilla or else pronounced Cam-eye-la

What country or language is it from?

DailyCake · 15/03/2025 23:25

How you want to pronounce Camila is how the Indian name Kamila is pronounced.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 15/03/2025 23:26

I wouldn’t have known your pronunciation. I’m sure I could learn it if I was your neighbour/colleague/teacher.

Sal17690 · 15/03/2025 23:26

So are you hoping for Camila to rhyme with Pamela?

meganorks · 15/03/2025 23:26

Everyone will say Ca mil a

Fluffyeye · 15/03/2025 23:28

Spell it “Camella” for the pronounciation that you want. Camila is going to almost always be pronounced like Camilla

DiscoBeat · 15/03/2025 23:33

I would read it as Camilla. Why not spell it Camela ok instead? When looking at names a top priority for us was nothing that people would struggle to spell, pronounce or misread!

Manchesterbythesea · 15/03/2025 23:35

She will always be called Camilla and you will spend a lifetime correcting people. Just call her Camilla. It’s a beautiful name.

PickettWhiteFences · 15/03/2025 23:37

Our Queen is called Camilla, I think very few people will pronounce it Ca-me-la

SkaneTos · 15/03/2025 23:37

The name Camila makes me think of the singer Camila Cabello, and I would pronounce the name "Ca-Mee-La", or similar.

The name Camilla makes me think of Queen Camilla, and I pronounce that name "Ca-Mill-a"/"Ca-Mi-Luh" or similar. (I am bad at explaining how I pronounce).

Sal17690 · 16/03/2025 02:37

Or Kamala if you are aiming for same pronunciation as Kamala Harris?

Tbrh · 16/03/2025 02:38

Sal17690 · 16/03/2025 02:37

Or Kamala if you are aiming for same pronunciation as Kamala Harris?

And everyone pronounces Kamala Harris' name wrong, so please don't do this

Zanatdy · 16/03/2025 02:41

I’d say it the traditional way - like our queen consort. Don't do it, she will always have to correct people.

SallyDraperGetInHere · 16/03/2025 02:54

would you go with Camille (Ka-meel)? Such a pretty name. On first glance, I’d have thought you meant Camilla, emphasis on the MILL. If spelt Camela, I’d be unsure if you meant it to sound like Ca(r)mela Soprano.

GoodVibesHere · 16/03/2025 04:06

You'd need to spell it Cameela to get the pronounciation you're after.

9fthighfence · 16/03/2025 04:11

Why would you do this to yourself / your daughter? Camilla is a nice name because it’s classic. I’d stick with that. It becomes much less classy when you mess around with the spelling.

Apollonia1 · 16/03/2025 04:46

Camila is the Spanish spelling, and pronounced as the OP wants.
Like the singer Camila Cabello.

Only issue is, in the UK, most people will automatically pronounce it the UK way, not the Spanish way (until corrected).

dex79 · 16/03/2025 06:28

I would have read it your way OP but have worked with a lot of non British colleagues for years so I don’t automatically assume British pronunciations, do you want DD to only be known as Camila? Mila is a pretty diminutive and I think if she was known as Camila/ Mila then people would be more likely to see that the full version is just cah on the front?

Well, yes, they would. Because this isn’t Spain.

RedCatBlueCatYellowCat · 16/03/2025 08:21

I have colleagues called Camila, pronounced the way OP wants it. It isn't the least confusing, it has never occurred to me it was a misspelling of Camilla.

I agree with this. I would judge it by the number of Ls, so:

Camilla - I would pronounce Ca-mill-a
Camila - I would pronounce Ca-me-la

it’s just whether or not people follow the typical rules of English language pronunciation!
