111 said they would call back. That was 7 hours ago.

I called 111 on behalf of my Mum midday today. They said a clinician would call me back but I wasn't given a timescale. They did tell me I wasn't to call them back chasing.
Is this usual? I've not used the service in years.

I know if we'd gone to A&E we would still be waiting to be seen. I've put her to bed now so if they do call me back I don't want to wake her.

Do you think they will still call tonight? In the early hours or tomorrow.

Any advice pls.

What is wrong with your Mum?

Needanewnamey · 15/03/2025 19:26

Call and chase

Cheesesteakyum · 15/03/2025 19:30

If you still feel she needs to be seen by a doctor or are worried I’d call back yes.

111 did make a mistake with my call once when I phoned about DS, was referred to two different paediatricians in different hospitals and each thought the other was picking it up or something along those lines so that has always made me not worry about phoning back if it’s been a while and I’ve not heard back.

Mrsttcno1 · 15/03/2025 19:30

Totally depends on the reason for your call. 111 is a triage process, the more urgent the sooner you’ll hear back.

Lightuptheroom · 15/03/2025 19:33

I'd call back, we've had this saga lots of times with my dad, even having one time where they phoned back 48 hours later to tell me the clinician had decided my dad was 'fine' because they had rung my mum back (who at the time had advanced dementia) and she'd told the clinician to f off! So we then had to call 999 instead...

Newtess · 15/03/2025 19:42

We've usually been called back within 4 hours in recent weeks. They called at 2am a couple of weeks ago. So I'd check you've not been forgotten and expect a call at any time of night.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 15/03/2025 20:01

I'd call back, op xx

AllyDally · 15/03/2025 20:02

Depends what's wrong, if you're concerned you need to go to A&E regardless of 111 calling back.

Hohofortherobbers · 15/03/2025 20:06

2 weeks ago I got my call back 10 hours after my call at 10am, clinician then sent us to A&E at 8pm on a sat night. If there's a chance you think you'll end up being referred to a&e give up and go now. Clinician said she had over 300 follow up calls to make, they're swamped

Emma543 · 15/03/2025 20:08

I’ve been waiting for a response from 111 also, apparently very busy!

DenholmElliot11 · 15/03/2025 20:08

There's a reduced service at week-ends so that will delay things.

Whats wrong with your mum? She's safely in bed now isn't she?

HomeBodyClub · 15/03/2025 20:09

When I rang they called me back within the hour. Is she well and settled at the moment?

Horrace · 15/03/2025 20:19

She's been poorly for a few weeks. Started with sore throat, ear ache and thrush on her tongue. She's not been able to eat or swallow and has lost over a stone. Been to the GP 4 times in 2 weeks. Lots of tests planned, bloods, chest xray, stool sample as she has diarrhea.
But I know this sounds silly, she feels too poorly to sit in a hard chair in A&E for 15 hours. We were hoping that 111 would phone ahead so she could go through triage to a soft chair quicker.

She is in bed now. We will chase in the morning. She really needs to sleep now.

Oh bless her. I totally don't blame her not feeling up to sitting in A&E. She must feel really ill. I would get her seen to ASAP tho, I would think dehydration is a real risk x
