Was this a bit mean spirited?

Yesterday I was shopping at Morrisons and my DS was using one of the small children trolleys.

We got to the checkouts and there is a children’s checkout where little ones can sit behind the till and scan the shopping through with a member of staff.
A member of staff was sitting there but the barrier was across, I asked her and she said she was on her break, so I said no problem and proceeded to the normal checkout next to her and paid as usual. This took about 2 minutes as we didn’t have much. As soon as I took the receipt she reopened the children’s checkout!

I thought that was a bit mean and she could have mentioned that she only had a few minutes until
reopening as clearly we were hoping to use the children’s checkout. I didn’t expect her to come off her break early or anything but seemingly she was about to finish anyway. We would have just had another walk around and came back.

If she was on her break why wasn't she off the sales floor?
How odd.

Yeah she probably could've said something.

Mind you, it was probably more than 2 minutes.

Coffeeishot · 15/03/2025 14:21

Their tills are timed for breaks our Morrisons is the same as in they are strict with tills , I mean she did open it your dc got through it isn't a big deal he just had to wait.

I don't think there is ever a perfect supermarket checkout experience

There isn't really you just have to go with the flow sometimes.

It will likely be this

I’m currently with someone who works in a different supermarket, so obviously the rules could be very different, but even if you’re only having a fifteen minute break, you have to leave the shop floor. It’s something they’re quite strict about, otherwise you’d be just asking for a queue of shoppers who need help and are getting really annoyed that the staff member isn’t helping them.

If her till was timed, all she had to do was say so.

Coffeeishot · 15/03/2025 14:35

She just said she was on her break the op didn't need to know anymore than that really, anyway I think the op and pps just fancy a moan about supermarket staff not jumping to attention 🤔

When I worked in retail you never spent a second longer on the sales floor than you had to 😁
Sitting on a till doing nothing but having to still respond to customers is hardly a break.

RawBloomers · 15/03/2025 14:52

I don’t know about mean. She probably just didn’t think, may not even have realised her break was nearly up and was tired of being bothered by people when she was on her break.

But it’s somewhat poor customer service. Generally just not that friendly and helpful but specifically she shouldn’t be on the shop floor on her break if she isn’t prepared to be “on duty” when a customer approaches and she should have let you know when it would reopen.

Goldengirl123 · 16/03/2025 15:43

Seriously? Another entitled child being raised

Jeschara · 16/03/2025 15:49

FFS are you really so bothered about this that you had to start a post. She was on a break, that's all you need to know.
The assistant was not mean you need to accept this, and it is a good lesson for your child, they can't get what they want all the time.

Goldengirl123 · 16/03/2025 15:51

Sorry, shouldn’t have said that. Not in a good mood
