To think that you don’t need a title to lead - you just need to do it?

I’ve noticed that the best leaders in workplaces, social groups, or even friendships aren’t always the ones with official authority. They’re the ones who step up, take initiative, and inspire others, regardless of their position. AIBU to think leadership is more about action than status? Or do titles matter more than I’m giving them credit for?

Some of the most influential people in the world remain in the background. There's a difference between a leader and a figurehead for sure.

Depends where you need to lead people - in life it's not about titles, leadership behaviours can be shown by anyone, of any age, anywhere. At work? It's hard to lead people very far if you don't have the authority to make or sign off on decisions - not impossible (and you'll still see good leadership behaviours from junior staff often enough), but definitely hard.

Definitely agree. Sadly many organisations get think managers are leaders.

It's difficult to lead if you're not senior, as it tends to put the senior people's noses out of joint. You need to be in the hierarchy.

We have a few of those in the office and they’re actually bloody annoying. They’re not managers or supervisors but seem to think they are. They should do their own work and stop trying to organise everyone else!

What’s funny is that our team has two of these Queen Bee types - and despite being very similar, they can’t stand each other.

Too many cooks springs to mind.

You can't have every Tom, Dick and Harry and deciding they're going to be an unofficial leader. It can lead to chaos and lots of people being rubbed up the wrong way.

Not to mention they'll be doing their unofficial job for no extra pay.

This is really interesting. I run a really successful team. I have come to the conclusion that it is due to two members of the team who, maybe don’t have the skill set to ‘manage’ the team, definitely ‘lead’ the team due to their personalities. They are positive, problem solvers, and their attitude has rubbed off on the rest.

for me, someone has to take charge and if i knew what im doing then ill lead and its upto others if they want to follow, no good shouting if they dont listen so i prefer just to crack on and if they want to help then ill give roles for what needs to do what etc
