Squidcard ceasing trade with UK schools and keeping the money

As the title says: Squid is a payment processing system which many UK schools use for processing payments for trips, school dinners etc.

They've decided to cease trading in the UK and are refusing to refund parents for any purse money that is under £10. This means they are keeping multiple hundreds of pounds per school they work with, as those small amounts add up quickly.

I'm putting this out there because 1) I know the tabloids live in AIBU and this has got to be a good story, and 2) please be patient with school admin staff because they've been left as high and dry as everyone else right now.

(They've actually said "you can claim the money back if you deposit £10 additional money" but it's impossible to tell if you would even get that amount back??)

And because I know it's AIBU: AIBU to say that if your company is choosing to cease trading, I should not be the one penalized for that? It surely does not cost you £10 to process a refund.

They're claiming they aren't going into receivership but this is not the behaviour of a solvent business.

My kids school contacted us early last week and told us squid was closing the business and they were changing payment supply and advised us to request any funds back. I requested 2 amounts at the end of last week, both under £10. One is back in my bank and the other says being processed.

If it hasn't been processed yet, it's unlikely to be. I requested my money back last Friday, I have email proof, but their statement now if you ring them is that they aren't processing any more refunds. The cutoff was sometime on the 7th March.

Which I would add, is not what they said, they said people could request refunds up until April.

I believe if your balance was over £10, you might have a chance of getting it back, but under £10 they're keeping it.

Highly recommend getting in touch with Squid directly if you happen to be affected by this (putting that out there for anyone else reading!) They genuinely seem to think this is okay.
