To think these people are on power trips?

Today I was trying to buy some paracetamol when I was asked for ID. I provided the woman serving me with this to which she then spent about a whole minute checking it from every angle trying to prove it was fake. I felt quite humiliated as all I was trying to do was buy some painkillers and she was acting like I was doing something very dodgy.
I also another time was almost refused to be even let into a pub let alone buy any alcohol despite having my ID on me because the bouncer seemed to think it was stolen, not even fake but stolen >:(
I get that they have to check these things but surely once I've shown my ID I should be able to be served without being humiliated? And they shouldn't assume that I am some sort of criminal after giving them what they have asked for. I am in my 20s btw.

OP, I would honestly take this as a compliment that they are really scrutinising your ID because you look so young. You’ll be thankful for it in later years trust me! I was asked for ID age 37 to buy anadin extra in a supermarket and was delighted 🤣 I get that it must be annoying though.

spuddy4 · 13/03/2025 17:57

They are not on a power trip. They treat everyone as though you are a plant either from head office or the local council. Best case scenario they get a warning if they fail an internal audit, worse case scenario if it's local authorities they get prosecuted and face huge fines. It may be an inconvenience to you but they are literally doing their jobs.

Iknowaboutpopular · 13/03/2025 17:58

They are just doing their job. If you don't look 25, you'll have to prove you're over 18.

I've worked in hospitality and I can't tell you the amount of moochers we used to get who try it on. It would have been me in trouble if I'd served someone underage.

I'm in my late 30s now and trust me you'll think you're the best thing since sliced bread if you get asked for ID at my age!!

sometimesmovingforwards · 13/03/2025 17:59

Humiliated is a pretty strong word in these circumstances you delicate little flower 😂😂😂

FOJN · 13/03/2025 18:00

You're taking it way too personally.

DoYouReally · 13/03/2025 18:00

No, they aren't on power trips.

They are ensuring they keep their job by following the procedures which are a mandatory party of their employment.

What job do you do that you can just do what you want and not what your employer dictates?

Magnastorm · 13/03/2025 18:01

They are just doing their jobs.

The penalties for not properly checking IDs and selling restricted products to minors etc are very harsh, so understandably staff are informed to check things properly.

slightlyannoyed174 · 13/03/2025 18:02

Like I said I get they are doing their job but as I have said I am in pain trying to buy painkillers and they are trying to scrutinize my ID and trying to prove I have done something wrong. I would understand if it was a clearly fake ID or if I didn't have any but for them to also assume it's stolen does not seem right.

Yep. My heart sinks a little every time I'm not asked for ID when buying alcohol. The policy here is that they pretty much always ask. Apart from me as I'm obviously ancient.

slightlyannoyed174 · 13/03/2025 18:05

I was asked to provide my bank card in one instance for them to prove I was who I said I was. Surely they do not have the right to ask for that? Is that just doing their jobs?

Nobody is scrutinising you. Nobody is out to get you. It is their job to protect themselves against people who are trying to buy products they shouldn't.

Yes.

OP, YABVU All of those people can lose their trading licences if they serve someone under age. Losing their trading licence means losing their business, their mortgage and their ability to feed their families.

I grew up in a pub, and believe me, we scrutinised IDs. We weren't on a power trip, we were doing our jobs and protecting ourselves.

If you don't like it, take it up with the politicians who create the rules.

sometimesmovingforwards · 13/03/2025 18:20

In all of these situations, please stop thinking you’re a main character.

AcquadiP · 13/03/2025 18:24

Oh, how I would love to be asked to prove my age and then have doubt cast upon the proof provided. Take it as a compliment. If you look younger than you are, you'll age well.

FidosMum84 · 13/03/2025 18:25

At some point this will stop, and you’ll be at a supermarket self service till when they come over and automatically press the over 25 button without a word to you. That’s when you have a right to be disappointed.
This is not humiliating, it’s bordering on a humble brag. Suck it up.

IPM · 13/03/2025 18:26

I think you're being a bit silly OP.

Their jobs are far more important to them than your paracetamol or your night at the pub.

So you had to wait a 'whole minute' while they checked your ID in the chemist and you 'almost' didn't get into a pub?

Really not a big deal.

OP, yes it's a pain, but when you are my age (late 40s) you'll miss looking young enough! I still remember the last time I was ID'd, I was 34!!!! Sure it felt a bit humiliating not to be believed that I was over 18 or whatever!! (I was already married with a kid at the time!) but the reality is I looked young, and that's great! I definitely no longer look young and I'd love to be ID'd again 🤣🤣 or for someone to think I looked so young my driving license must be fake!!

Enjoy it while it lasts!!
