Does ovulation make you ill?

For the past few years I've been experiencing increasing discomfort around ovulation. Bloating, cramps and heaviness in the area and very heavy clear fluid (sorry tmi).

But the past few months I actually feel ill around this time too. Nauseas and loss of appetite and occasional bouts of severe diarrhoea. Last night I went to bed feeling fine and woke up in the middle of the night with the worst stomach cramps followed by horrific diarrhoea. Could this be related to ovulation? I'm approaching 40 so could be the start of peri but I never knew gastro issues were part of it.

Or is it more likely to be unrelated and just coincidently happens around this time of the month. I'm at the stage where ovulation is as bad as if not worst than getting my period.

Ask your GP to he referred for a pelvic ultrasound. I had these symptoms and I have 2 ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are very common (and are mostly benign so nothing to worry about), but can be a nightmare around ovulation time. An ultrasound would rule out or confirm a cyst/cysts.

My daughter was sick for a week every month before her period. It took us far too long to realise it was related to hormone fluctuations in her cycle. She would be off school vomiting for a week every time.

Oh gosh that sounds severe. Is it due to the hormone changes?

I always feel as my absolute best before and during ovulation so I’d get checked out incase it’s a cyst or hormone imbalance.

Yes, I get nauseous when ovulating. I also get cramps and I am hotter (in temp) and have a very sensitive vagina/vulva. It is like everything is hyper-aware and just "off".

I kind of relate to animals in heat who get horny and temperamental lol.

It's actually kind of unpleasant... But it lasts 24hrs intensely and then is over.

When I was doing IVF and fertility investigations the doctor told me there was no way I would know/be able to tell which side had the most follicles or which side the egg was released from.

I proved him wrong every single time.

I sometimes get ovulation pain on one side and cramps and maybe a headache. It’s more noticeable since I’ve reached my mid/late 40s but I’m not unwell in any other way.

gingertodgers · 12/03/2025 22:49

I've had the bloating, mood swings and discharge for years. It's like another period in many ways.

But the gastro stuff is recent and just feels weird. I'm noticing my moods seem more extreme too. Get very frustrated one minute but the next I'm happy almost hyper.

Around 40 this started happening to me and to a few of my similar aged peri friends too.
Period flu, and Ovulation Flu!
Sometimes its more GI related, nausea etc sometimes more a feeling of feeling like you’re coming down with something.
sometimes both.
Ovulation pain/discomfort too. Distinctly since late 30’s.
But also agree with a PP that you should investigate also Ovarian Cysts - as this also happened to me and causes similar symptoms, esp extreme bloating.

I had "how do you know it's ovary pain?"

Well it's on the right hand side, exactly where my ovary is, and there's a 12cm cyst on it so... if it's not my ovary theres a big problem!

Honestly... It is kind of soul crushing trying to sort any sort of female issue. They really don't listen to us at all.

Even pain management offered to my DH vs what I had to go through with a "take a paracetamol if you need to".

PCOS and endometriosis. Both ovulation and menstruation have been hell for years. Got significantly worse early 30s.

Endometriosis was discovered because I was sent for a scan for gallstones. A fresh new hell. One way to get them to check your ovaries though.

DoYouReally · 12/03/2025 23:24

I have this and suffer from both endometriosis and fibroids (with 1 they cannot remove - I'm convinced that's the one causing all the problems!)

This I have just turned 40 and over the last year I have felt like 💩 at ovulation or just after. Sharp ovary pain and exhausted, headaches and general body ache. I had an ultrasound to investigate cysts but came back clear well that’s what the receptionist told me 🫣 I’ve kind of lost the will to go back to GP wondering if going back on the mini pill will help…… I’m guessing it’s peri but it’s just crap

Cara707 · 13/03/2025 00:16

I have mood swings (worse than PMS) and nausea during ovulation and sometimes sharp pain (mittelschmerz) on one side. If you have new onset stomach/bowel issues though it's probably a good idea to see the GP, just to check.

Same. Went for a kidney scan and they found an ovary cyst
Pointed out I had said to my GP a decade ago I thought I might have endo, she said no need for a referral and nothing they could do if I didn't want the pill

Ten years on I'm waiting for excision surgery with an endo specialist and a bowel surgeon because it's now stage 4 deep infiltrating with adenomyosis, bowel and bladder involved

Going to have "I told you so" tattooed on me somewhere
