To think this is a lot of hair loss in shower?

I posted a few days about the amount of hair I lose when I brush and got useful responses. I want to add a pic here of the amount I lost when I showered today and indeed when I typically shower.

I'm early 30s, no obvious health issues that would cause this, no pregnancies etc. Bloods etc all normal. I've struggled with hair loss so long that I've lost sight of what's normal to be honest. I thought the hair loss had stabilised but here we go again.

It's a lot, isn't it? I have hair just past my shoulders. It's not long. Already v thin.

My hair falls out like that and my worse but I have an iron issue. Have you had your bloods done?

HoldingThePoisonDown · 12/03/2025 19:30

Did you get a copy of your blood tests results, or can you see the levels on the app?
Ferritin can be marked as ‘normal’ at a ridiculously low level, but it needs to be above 70 for healthy hair growth. Likewise B12 levels can be marked as normal quite low but you can suffer hair loss at the low end of normal, same with Vitamin D levels. It’s worth checking you actual levels and compare them to the labs reference range.

angelspike · 12/03/2025 19:30

Is that daily loss? I've had massive hair loss recently

ThatGladTiger · 12/03/2025 19:32

Do you brush your hair in the shower? I’ve started brushing it dry and not in the shower and it’s massively reduced.

I also asked my GP about this and apparently your hair does through shedding cycles so there will be more hair loss at certain times.

FairTurtle · 12/03/2025 19:32

My ferritin, b12 and Vitamin B levels are not just normal but actially optimal. Have seen the results myself. Ferritin is 94.

angelspike · 12/03/2025 19:34

One thing I did for mine was to photo it - I couldn't see the loss was reducing until I put them together
I wash every 3-4 days and don't brush my hair

Try glowa supplements

Woollysocksandbeer · 12/03/2025 19:35

I have bum long hair and I shed like Yetti in summer. DH is drain cleaner....

I mega panicked at times, but don't forget that when you untangle this it will actually look much less. If I remember right you had past shoulders hair?
It's something like 100 hair a day. It just looks so much more when you have ball because you have longer hair

Yes! This as well.

CulturalNomad · 12/03/2025 19:40

It's tedious, but let the clump of hair dry and then do your best to count how many strands make up the clump.

It's entirely normal to shed 50-100 strands per day. That doesn't look like a tremendous amount of hair you're holding, especially if you only shampoo every few days.

JoyDreamer86 · 12/03/2025 19:42

I also have dark hair, mine seems relatively thick but that looks similar to my loss on some days. Seems to vary for me but not sure why I lose more some days or weeks than others.

Castlereagh · 12/03/2025 19:46

That picture is similar to mine when the loss is reducing and things are getting back to normal. There are pictures on dermnet NZ of telogen effluvium (which is basically when you lose lots of hair at once after stress, illness or a nutrition deficit - it might be worth having a look and comparing. Lots of different things can cause a bit of hair loss at times and there's not always a quick fix in terms of vitamins or whatever. It can feel really worrying and I think we can over focus on it and look for a miracle cure sometimes.

My agreement with myself is only to worry if I've got bald patches which are visible to others, which is almost never , despite looking like absolutely loads comes out in the shower.

greengreyblue · 12/03/2025 19:48

Do you brush your hair between hair washes? I’d say it’s on the high end of normal .

TeenLifeMum · 12/03/2025 19:52

I lose about that in the shower. I think it depends what’s normal for you and your hair type. But Ferritin at 94?! wtf? I didn’t know it went that high 😂 mine is high at 24 and anything above 12 is a bonus.

Yes, I brush it daily even if not washing it.

Haha its only that high cos I actually take supplements!

Whatthebarnacles · 12/03/2025 19:54

I lose around 3x that amount, possibly more, per shower/hair wash. I also shed when brushing in the mornings in between. My hair is fine too so it is worrying when it happens. I try to wash once every 5 days - if I can push it that far.

FWIW, have a folate reading of 1 and am on daily folic acid for 4 months. 2 months in and not seeing a difference in anything yet. I'm also borderline (not enough to medicate yet apparently) for hypothyroidism, and am perimenopausal.

Christ, I sound like I'm falling apart 🙈

Goldpanther · 12/03/2025 19:56

I've started losing more hair than I would say is normal for me. But it is less than what looks like in your picture.

I've switched to anti hair loss shampoo and make a real effort to brush from the ends of my hair up, to limit unnecessary pulling.

Mine is up to 15 WITH supplements so congratulations:). Are you on a diet? My sister lost plenty of hair because she wasn't eating enough...

Zeroperspective · 12/03/2025 20:08

Following simply because I lose a LOT more and am now wondering if I shouldn't have just been shrugging and ignoring it....

CustardCreamBiscuit · 12/03/2025 20:15

I started losing a lot of hair in September last year and like you went and had blood tests done to be told everything was normal, I even went to a trichologist as I was so worried but that came back as normal too. My hair dresser did say that my shedding cycle could just be out of sync and needed time to sort itself out
I decided to start taking B12 after looking at my blood test results and seeing that I was ever so slightly lacking however nothing the doctors were concerned about but I feel like that has helped
I use a scalp serum from kerastase every hair wash that promotes growth
I’d recommend concentrating on scalp health and not changing too many products at once trying to solve the issue

Ooh, that's so helpful. I have ok iron but low end of normal ferritin, already take vit b12 and d supplements.

treesandsun · 12/03/2025 20:48

I generally lose quite a lot each day but sometimes it goes through stages of seeming a lot more and I panic. When I mentioned it to the hairdresser he asked about things such as stress/covid/general illness and then said it was my age! He is a friend so gets away it . I always find mine sheds much more when I am overdue a good cut. I started using Waterman's Grow me shampoo and conditioner. I try to clip it up rather than pull it up with bands.
I also bought but don't use because I don't like it - a seven star plum hammer - it is a mini hammer with prongs you hit yourself on the head with which it supposed to stimulate hair growth. I am not making it up! https://www.instagram.com/p/DGfyiOBvj-8/

This is perfectly normal. Hair goes through several stages of growth and shedding. At various periods throughout the year you will/may have "the big shed". I typically have it every 9 month where for 2 month or so I lose copious amount of hair with every wash. It then stops almost completely for another 9 months. It is especially apparent if you don't brush your hair between washes and if you only wash it intermittently. And it can look positively alarming if you have longish hair.
