DS9 won’t eat salad/cold veg

everygreenleaf · 12/03/2025 12:06

He’ll eat steamed veg so broccoli, carrots, cauli and baby sweetcorn so that’s good but I’m looking at the picky teas once the weather warms up.

He won’t eat fruit and veg with a skin on so none of the following:

Cucumber
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Sweetcorn
Peppers
Onion

Does anyone else’s DC not eat any salad at all? Do u just keep steaming the 3 veg in place of the cold picky salad the rest of us will have?

I wouldn't eat any of that at that age either.

They all have strange tastes/texture.

Firstly don't mix things up.

Don't have things being wet.

None of these are essential to a diet so find alternative.

WhySoManySocks · 12/03/2025 14:28

I’m 44 and would not eat the things you listed, or anything called “picky tea” 🤮

I hope your DC eats some other vegetables other than the three you listed?

YouveGotAFastCar · 12/03/2025 14:29

I'm in my mid-30s, and neither do I. I just don't like it.

trybest · 12/03/2025 14:46

My DS(10) is a picky eater and refused to even try any vegetables for years. It got to a point where I only cooked meat on 1 or 2 days a week, and after time he got used to it.

nookmiles · 12/03/2025 14:51

I'm 40 and absolutely hate salad / raw veg!

CloudywMeatballs · 12/03/2025 14:53

Eating salad isn't mandatory. But neither is steaming vegetables to be served on the side of a meal, unless I guess most of your meals are of the meat and two veg variety. We eat vegetables with every meal, but they are usually incorporated into the meal, whether it's a stew, curry, pasta sauce, etc. Yesterday we had salmon served with a side of lentils cooked with chard.

waitingquietly · 12/03/2025 14:56

One of mine is the other way around - but yes I still give them the salad all year round - more important to me that they get the nutrients than making everyone eat exactly the same . This is a child though that will go hungry rather than eat something that isn’t right ! He’s now 15 🤦🏻‍♀️

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/03/2025 14:59

Will he eat cucumber if it's peeled, OP?

TheIceBear · 12/03/2025 15:01

I’m 38 and I won’t eat any of that stuff I’ve never liked it and find it disgusting. I eat a varied diet with plenty of cooked vegetables and fruit. I really wouldn’t be bothered about this.

TheIceBear · 12/03/2025 15:03

The term “picky tea” turns my stomach

SeaToSki · 12/03/2025 15:05

Try peeling cucumber and then chopping into sticks or circles
Try red and yellow peppers chopped into thin sticks
Try spiralising or grating courgette (keep the skins on)

Mine arent fond of leaves..rabbit food as far as they are concerned, but will eat battons/sticks of raw veggies

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 12/03/2025 15:08

I was a nanny for a long time... I didn't work with many children who liked salad.

In fact I can only think of one, but she was a little weirdo. Her fave snacks were sardines and black olives lol.

Your son is perfectly normal!

I am 33 and if I have a choice I will always choose cooked veg over salad. I also only like green grapes, watermelon, strawberries and raspberries. No other fruit.

Have you tried roasting him some radishes? Do them exactly like you would potatoes and they are really yummy.
There's lots of fun veg ideas you can do and in the summer if you want salad, just bung him in a bag of veg in the microwave or do meal prep at the beginning of the week.

TwistedWonder · 12/03/2025 15:10

Im nearly 60 and I don’t touch salad or raw veg. I eat plenty of cooked veg but lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes are the devils food

everygreenleaf · 12/03/2025 16:18

He will eat hidden veg so stews, casseroles, curries and spaghetti bol etc.

Then the whole veg on the side is carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and baby sweetcorn (and baked beans).

He’s tried peas and doesn’t like them. Same with sweet potato and courgette. He will sometimes eat mushroom but not always.

He does ok. Good to get other ideas from here. Thanks all.

Have you tried chopped, shredded or grated small to help with the skin texture? Tabouleh or slaw type thing?

EwwSprouts · 12/03/2025 16:51

There are cooked but served cold salad recipes such as cauliflower, broccoli, bacon and finely diced red onion. The fastest one I do is cook mushrooms in garlic and olive oil, stir through pasta with finely chopped spring onions, serve cold and keeps in fridge for a couple of days.

Oh thank god!
I was beginning to think I was some anti cold vegetables eating freak!
Can't get enough of them cooked, but cold is 😱.

Wowwellokthen · 12/03/2025 17:14

I'm so jealous of all your fantastic eaters!
I have DS (18) who has recently been diagnosed as coeliac so tricky to feed at times but does eat fruit/veg/salad luckily. I also have DD (17) who has no intolerances or SN and eats no fruit, no veg and no salad at all - hasn't since she was a toddler. Literally would rather eat nothing at all.
