Thrush treatment

I have just been to my doctor and she thinks I have thrush. She has prescribed me Canesten thrush pessary to insert tonight. I have health anxiety and worry about everything! Has anyone had this before and did it help?

I’m sure pretty much every woman out there has used this or some form of thrush treatment in their life. It’s very safe. I’ve never had any side effects.

(I have invasive Candida from autoimmune issues and I’m under 2 specialists for it; I use canestan every 2 weeks and I’m on Fluconazole permanently. Most people will just need to do a one off treatment).

If you have a sexual partner they will need to be treated as well at the same time otherwise you’ll pass it between you.

Not sure why you've posted this in aibu, but you have thrush and you were prescribed a treatment for thrush. Yes it helps.

What specifically is the anxiety?

Isla28 · 11/03/2025 18:17

Canestan has been a treatment for thrush for a long long time and doesn’t have notable side effects. Think positively: if you’ve managed to go for this long in your life without ever needing to treat thrush, you’re doing really well (and as a previous poster has said, make sure any sexual partners are also treated to minimise the risk of having to treat yourself again.)

Yes, Canesten is excellent. Just about everyone has thrush in their system, most of the time your body keeps it under control, but if things become imbalanced (through stress, change of lifestyle, antibiotics, all sorts of factors) it can become a problem. Use the pessary, then if possible use unperfumed soaps etc, don't wear tight/sweaty pants, jeans etc until it settles down. If you can, wear skirts at home with no knickers, let the air get to your undercarriage!! If you have a sexual partner he/she should have treatment too, as otherwise you can keep passing it back and forth to each other. GPs are often not clued up about this.
