Autistic 5yr old, part time timetable at school so not due in school for another hour, I’ve cleaned the toilets this morning. He just went for a wee and said mummy yuck make it stop - he can’t tell me 100% but I’m worried he has scooped some bleach bubbles out of the toilet bowl and tasted them.
he was in there literally 10 seconds without me so not like he was was feasting.
he is now happily eating some Pom bears with a cup of water.
I’m panicking I’ve managed to poison him. Do I need to take him to a&e?

I would imagine it’s just the bleach smell which is over powering? If you are worried, call 111

Ricecakesaremyjam · 11/03/2025 12:12

No he definitely put something in his mouth because he was trying to spit it out.

No advice but solidarity, my autistic dd, 5, is exactly the same, can't turn my back for a minute

She had a huge meltdown at Christmas because I wouldn't let her jump in the river Thames 😭 - we were viewing christmas lights at the time.

Keep going mum, you've got this ❤️

Oh goodness poor you, I feel your pain as I have two ND children. Was the toilet flushed so it was just tiny dregs of the bleach? I'd be inclined to make a quick call to the non emergency line if you're worried, bleach is a horrible chemical but if it's just a flushed loo it's probably fine. Good luck - if you can, flush twice in future

According to the gov website, a child can ingest up to 50ml of household bleach with minimal effect. It seems wild but that's the guidance. Seeing that bleach is routinely used in drinking water and baby bottle sterilising liquids, I really don't think you poisoned your son.

I mean he is acting normally, not complaining of anything or still trying to spit anything out so I’m inclined to think he licked it and then went ugh
Add it to the list of things to watch him like a hawk with.

In future in situations like this immediately smell his breath. Most cleaning products are strong enough that you will smell if some has gone in their mouth.

My friend's child would lick the toilet rim when it had been bleached. Maybe your child did this? Either way if they're on the Pom bears now I doubt there's any damage. Kids eh?
