Toddler and Too Much Cough mixture

I am awaiting 111 to call me back but I've accidentally given my 20 month old too much Calcpugh Infant Syrup 15ml rather than the 5.

She was fine when given it and we didn't realise the mistake until she was asleep...... but here's my Aibu my husband is refusing to drive us to hospital as she's asleep and waking her to wait around in a and e would be worse for her unless 111 say it's necessary and it's just cough mixture!

I don't drive (no flaming please I just can't and have never needed to) we've had a blazing row- I'm beside myself that I've made such a fuck up and don't see why he won't take us!

I want to tell him to just pack his bags tomorrow as he's so laid back about everything! I feel this is the final straw in our marriage the way he's spoken to me tonight

Currently sat next to the cot listening to her breathe!

AIBU and he should take us no question
YABU just wait it out

YABU wait it out. It's designed for infants.

The active ingredient in Calcough is glycerin which might give her a bit of diarrhoea, but that’s about it.

I wouldn’t take her to A&E unless 111 advise you to (they most likely will because she’s a toddler, but she probably doesn’t need to go) as she’d be at risk of all sorts of bugs in there! If she’s well in herself and sleeping normally, I think you can safely wait for 111 to call you back.

If it’s CalPOL, that’s a different story and she needs to go to A&E.

Hoydenish · 10/03/2025 22:36

Yes agree with pp, wait it out.

mynameiscalypso · 10/03/2025 22:38

I know how stressful it is but I'm with your DH here; 111 are generally extremely good at this sort of thing. Having been in A&E a lot recently, I really wouldn't go unless 111 felt it was medically necessary.

TY78910 · 10/03/2025 22:41

Agree with PPs, it's not like adult cough syrup that makes you high.

Just because I'm being nosey - how did you give her 15ml? Even with calpol you'd give a syringe and a half? How did you give her 3 syringes full? Or is this over the space of a day?

JollyHostess101 · 10/03/2025 22:41

Thank you all I'm probably being silly it's just the way he spoke to me like im not stressed enough!

It's been a really rubbish few days for various reasons and this just tops it off!

Definitely not calpol just the cough stuff!

I'd agree with so asking to 111. They were brilliant when my two managed to get into the medicine cabinet very high up, get the Calpol and take the childproof cap off and share it amongst themselves. They over estimated it -so more then was in the bottle for the smallest if the two and told me they were fine.

Ahhh she won't take it from the syringe so I poured it into the little plastic cup thing (normally use the syringe to measure it into this but tonight didn't won't be doing that again) but didn't realise it was from the her sambucol bottle and didn't look at the measurement line until afteeeards!

Needless to say won't be doing that again

If you are waiting for a call back from 111 then I can only assume it's not life threatening, like if it was paracetamol or ibuprofen. Glycerin might give her the poops but won't knock her out.

Everything okay this morning OP? Smile

JollyHostess101 · 11/03/2025 10:43

Was just coming back to update so thanks @WetBandits

Absolutely fine 111 called back at 6am and it's got absolutely nothing in it that could cause harm!

Feeling like and absolute muppet this morning though 🙈

these things happen, OP, so don't beat yourself up about it!

It'll just remind you to double and triple check everything next time. Medicine labels,
dosages etc.

You sound like a caring Mum so try not to worry. Glad to hear it was ok in the end.

Oh please don’t feel like that! She’s your baby, all rational thought and common sense go out the window when you’re worried about your little one. I’m a trained nurse and still turn into a headless chicken where my baby is concerned.

Glad she’s okay, early night for you tonight as I’m sure you didn’t sleep a wink Grin
