To think you can't have two colds two weeks apart?

I had a cold 2 weeks ago. Recovered, felt normal for a few days. Now I've got something going on in my throat. Really hoping its not covid but it doesn't feel like a regular cold this time. Awful headache, throat pain etc.

Has anyone ever had two illnesses like this literally two weeks apart? I don't have any kids and haven't been out much tbh (I wfh) so feeling a bit puzzled.

Tell me you don't have (small) kids without telling me you don't have kids!

Hibernatingtilspring · 10/03/2025 21:10

I'm usually lucky to manage a couple of days apart, from around October to March!
Given there are tonnes of different cold viruses, what makes you think you can't get a second one two weeks after a cold?

Though with the change in weather it's worth checking in case it's hayfever.

You definitely can

DanielRicciardosSmile · 10/03/2025 21:12

In exactly the same position. Had a (relatively) mild cold around 20th Feb then came down with a stinker on 9th March. Still suffering now.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 10/03/2025 21:12

Not 9th march - 2nd ffs! Obviously affecting my brain!

You can get colds one after the other.

You can only really tell if it's cold or flu or Covid from testing. My son was in a study where they tested every time he got a virus and let us know what it was. It was interesting because most of the time it was a cold, no matter the symptoms.

One time he got what I thought was a cold and I did an at-home Covid test that was negative and then I sent off the study swab and it came back that it was actually Covid. It makes me not trust the at-home Covid tests!

Of course you can. Do you think Virus B says 'ah I can see this victim just had Virus A, so I'll leave her be?' No! It says 'goody, she's under the weather from Virus A so will be easier for me to take hold, let's get stuck in'.

I had the same sore throat virus 3 times in a row since January, a week or so recovery in between each, and this last weekend caught the rotavirus from my baby's jabs! My husband had the same virus twice consecutively and his colleagues at work. I think its very normal at the moment!

SillyNavySnail · 10/03/2025 21:18

Of course you can. In fact I've had a second cold start before even fully recovered from the first cold, several times.

I had a bad long (2-3 weeks) cold in nov, dec, jan, milder one in early Feb and currently have another mild one. Some overlapping, some with a week or 2 gap. I have a 1yr old and 3yr old...

Hayfever has hit this house this week, worth considering.

Yes as you have different strains. There are about 200 strains of the cold virus.

Need to increase your immunity by increasing your fruit n veg intake. Plus take zinc, vitamin D and echinacea.

If you are a fussy eater, take multivits.

From my experience, my friends who are fussy eaters tend to get more colds than those who don't like much food.

We have all been ill for the last 532284748372 days. Dear god let spring come

AcquadiP · 10/03/2025 21:33

A colleague of mine has been coughing, sneezing and blowing her nose for the last four weeks!

mindutopia · 10/03/2025 21:43

Yes, of course, you can. Just because you have recent immunity to one of the bazillions of respiratory viruses doesn’t mean to have immunity to the rest of them.

Tarkan · 10/03/2025 22:49

I'm just getting over my fourth cold-like bug since mid-January. Each one has lasted 1-2 weeks at a time but I've had slightly different symptoms each time so I suspect there's maybe been a Covid or flu or both with maybe a cold and some other virus as well.

I didn't test so I'll never know what was what but what I do know is that I've feel utterly awful for way too long now with only a few days of being ok in between each of them. They're obviously different enough for me to have caught so many in a row and all I can do is hope this one is the last one for a while.

A robust immune system will be less susceptible to all those viruses. If people are getting viruses one after another, it's probably time to check whether you're immunocompromised in some way.

Can't remember the last time I had any kind of sniffle - and my DH had THAT flu over Christmas!

Yes when I went back to work after a six year gap with children. Three colds in two months.
