Have you given up on Torquay and Paignton then?

squashyhat · 10/03/2025 10:38

NO!

I live in that neck of the woods - the short answer is no in the summer months we a chock full of idiots on stag/hen do's who all think they are unique by dressing up as something stupid. Rents don't match quality of accommodation unless you are a devout surfer (and even then SWW have a lot to answer for as the sewage dumps are too regular to want to spend lots of time in the water)

well looking to leave london and escape completely from rat race,
was looking at the south west i know newquay really well as have been there many times over the years....

but i know alot of the bars and clubs in newquay had shut down was
trying to get someones perspective who lives that way.

I did look at brixham in devon which looked incredibly lovely but to hilly for my mum.

Newquay was buzzing in its club and pub era! When that died off, it went really run down and horrible. i went two years ago and it was really depressing.

I think the problem with wanting to move to Devon or Cornwall, if you want to be on the coast, is that everywhere is either going to expensive or a shithole. There are no undiscovered gems. That ship has sailed many years ago. Also because of the way our coastline is, a lot of coastal towns are hilly.

You would actually be much better off looking inland if you want somewhere more affordable. I live 50 minutes to a beach on either coast and we have lovely days at the seaside, but I would not be able to afford my house if it was in a nice coastal area.

Do also be aware of what challenges there are. I’m an hour+ door to door from the hospital (which you don’t appreciate until you need to go several times a week). It would be even further to a decent hospital if I was further in Cornwall. There are also no NHS dentists. My dentist is in London. I’ve never lived anywhere but the south west. That was simply the closest one I could find when I lost my previous dentist.

It’s a beautiful part of the country (maybe not Newquay, sorry!), but there is a definite trade off between cost, shittiness and amenities to be made.
