How to survive today?

Hi all,

I'm knackered Grin

I start a new job today and last night I went to bed at around 1am as DD was really unsettled and I woke up at 5.30am and I'm not sure why really, nerves maybe?

I feel okay really but I have to work until half 5, 6ish. I tried going back to bed but just couldn't sleep so I thought as might as well get up.

How's best to survive today or will the excitement of a new job see me through?

Luckily I don't think we'll be doing much as it's the first day - it's customer service/admin. I'm not like a pilot or heart surgeon or anything that being a bit tired would be dangerous haha

I'm just feeling sorry for myself but would appreciate some tips 😴

I think the adrenaline will get you through. Coffee but not too much! Best of luck, OP!

Good luck for today - go and sit in the sunshine for a bit when you can. Wait until 0800 to have coffee. Remember to take notes if you need to. Go to bed at a reasonable time!

Stay hydrated but also coffee. What sort of break will you get? Maybe go out for a little walk/fresh air.

We often send people home an hour earlier for their first few days as it’s hard to stretch the induction/training activities out to the full day and there’s nothing people can do before they’ve been fully trained.

Adrenaline will get you through! Have yourself a nice fresh shower and strong Coffee, Good Luck! Flowers

Natsku · 10/03/2025 06:21

Ah that sucks but I'm sure the excitement and adrenaline will get you through.
Twice recently I've had to go to work after only 3 hours of sleep (waking up at half one and not getting back to sleep) and it was tough but I got through, though my job requires concentration often (aircraft mechanic - not passenger aircraft though!) I just did jobs that didn't require much thinking and took lots of tea breaks.

A bit of fresh air in your break. Snacks (not sugary, so you don't slump). Water. Adrenaline will get you through. Don't mention your crap night. Goodluck! 🍀

The excitement of starting a new job will get you through. The first few days while you are learning new stuff are always the most exhilarating. Good luck!

I sometimes go to work with just an hours sleep. Somehow I always makes it through and go to bed at 10pm the next night.
Plenty of water and don't think about it

You'll be fine :)

Have a good breakfast like scrambled eggs. First day is usually lots of listening (which can be tiring in itself) so make lots of notes and stretch your legs as much as you can.

Girasoli · 10/03/2025 07:27

I think you will be fine...you'll have adrenaline plus first days in most new jobs tend to be inductions - here is how to use the intranet/here is how to contact IT etc.

Thank you all, I managed to get washed and dressed so I'm functioning some what 🤣

I've got plenty of water and a healthy lunch - not sure about walking outside because it's in the middle of no where 😭

I'm joining you empathetically. I have a full client list 9 until 6 and managed to go out twice this weekend past 3am ! Alongside lots of being a taxi driver for teenagers and DH. We will manage it!

LoveSkaMusic · 10/03/2025 11:27

You've got a child, so you're well versed in handling tiredness!

Stay hydrated, drink a small amount of coffee - not so much that you get jittery! and don't have a heavy lunch that will put you to sleep.

You've got this. Good luck with the new job!

Stretch the shoulders out, get the arms up in the air to move the muscles and get the blood flowing. First day hopefully won't ask too much of you. It's just trying to take stuff in and remember! Notes and review later?
