Neighbour annoyed we took her bin?

Normal rubbish bin collection and the bin collection people left mine and another bin in front of my drive.

Husband wasn’t sure which was ours so he took both, we leave them on the driveway so assumed whichever neighbours it was would get it. Which she did.

I’ve seen her today in passing and she retorting to please not take her bin onto our property and just leave it. She seemed really annoyed 🤔

It’s a bit odd to take two in when you knew one wasn’t yours? Get those number stickers for yours and then you will know which is which.

Use a sharpie to put your house number under the lid. That way DH will always know which bin is his.

ToffeeAppley · 09/03/2025 22:56

If you just moved both off the pavement, onto the edge of the drive, then YANBU.

If you took two bins down your drive when you know only one is yours YABU

Weird to take them both

If the bins are identical, why didn't he just take one?

RatedDoingMagic · 09/03/2025 22:58

If there are no identifying marks on either then it doesn't matter which one he takes, they are interchangeable. It was very unreasonable of him to take 2 onto your property.

Amanitacae · 09/03/2025 22:58

It's weird to take someone else's item on to your property. No wonder she felt a bit odd/stressed about it. Why do you feel your husband had the right to do that?

Jk987 · 09/03/2025 23:09

Why would you take both? 🤣

It’s a wheelie bin, why does it matter which?! Pick one and leave the other 😂 very strange to just take both.

You’ve probably been swapping bins every week without knowing about it!

Needanewnameidea · 09/03/2025 23:17

He was unreasonable and I’m not surprised she was cross. A mix up and accidentally taking her bin and leaving her yours is very understandable or just taking one of a pair of identical bins is fine but taking both is bizarre. I wouldn’t want to have to go into someone else’s property to retrieve my bin.

My pet bugbear is the guy near us who’s self nominated as the neighbourhood bin marshall and who “helpfully” returns my bin after the truck has been, including to the wrong neighbour or a couple of times to a similarly named cul du sac two streets along. It’s infuriating. Leave other people’s stuff alone unless it’s agreed otherwise.

Put your house number on your bin so there is no confusion.
We did that years ago after our clean bin was 'mistakenly' swapped for someone's dirty stinking bin.
