By and large they are both quite rough with a lot of social problems although there is a Beverley Hills bit overlooking the sea with some really nice big houses in the Wellswood area. St Marychurch is also nice.

That sounds like Thatcher Avenue and Ilsham Marine drive, it was always considered posh up there! Paignton however has always been a bit run down..

Beverly Hills is a great description!

When I was a child my parents took us on holiday to Paignton and Torquay and it was quite nice in those days but it has got run down. The schools are poor and they have a terrible drug problem. There is nothing much for teens to do. Lots of things shut down in the winter and it's bleak. Also the train track gets flooded with sea water around Dawlish. As others have said Brixham is nicer and not that far along the coast.

You get what you pay for.
Torquay is a bit more expensive than Paignton, Brixham is more expensive than Paignton but it's a pain to get in and out of.

Roundham, Goodrington, Broadsands in Paignton are the nicer ish areas, and on the way out of Paignton there is Churston. There is also Galmpton.

Torquay has Ilsham, St Marychurch, Babbacombe and Cockington.

if you want to be more specific i.e. a price range or a road you are considering ?

That is if you are buying, if you happen to be doing a social housing swap then yet again ' we ' can advise what the area/road is like.
i.e. if you are being offered a 2 bed flat in Kents Road TQ1 or a 2 bed flat in Hele, I would go for the first and not the second.

Can you give us more information on your circumstances op? Fairly typical of coastal towns in terms of pros and cons, so really depends what you're looking for.

Yep, that's the place. Ilsham Marine Drive. It's like driving into a completely different town up there.

Yes it's very posh!

I would be tempted to buy it, despite it being up for sale over a period of time and with 3 different agents, with my forthcoming :) lottery win.

Tho it's not Ilsham Marine Drive nor Thatcher Ave, it's not a million miles away.

Check out this 6 bedroom detached house for sale on Rightmove

6 bedroom detached house for sale in Lincombe Drive, Torquay, TQ1 for £1,995,000. Marketed by John Lake Estate Agents, Torquay

Good lord people on here are miserable...
It is a seaside location, so it has the problems that classically go alongside that, low wages and poverty, some visible homelessness in the shopping arcades etc etc.
It massively depends on the areas that you're looking at, if your budget is healthy enough you can live somewhere incredibly beautiful with tons of regeneration happening.
Are you looking to buy? What's your budget? What areas have you looked at already?

Feelingstrange2 · 10/03/2025 12:39

Paignton - no
Torquay - not really (some OK parts but expensive and can't really get away from.it still being Torquay)
Brixham - better, but much smaller

I'd go inland more as the nice coastal places in this area are eye watering prices.

Why Torbay?

PeachApricot · 10/03/2025 12:40

Both are awful. Would never move to either.
