AIBU to worry about my high fever?

I’ve been feeling f poorly these last few days but today it has peaked. Can barely out of bed, my heart rate ranges from about 100-140 just by standing up then my temp has creeped up to nearly 40. Clearly I have a virus of some sort but do I need to go to the gp in the morning? Paracetamol has brought my temp down but it keeps spiking when it wears off. Other symptoms include full body aches, chills and a really sore ears and throat. I’m never ill but the last time I had symptoms like this I was hospitalised for 4 days with a serious infection. Has anyone else had these
symptoms and did you seek medical help?

I believe you should always seek medical attention if you have a fever.

40 is pretty high. Mine was 39 the other day and I felt absolutely dreadful

There is a very nasty flu bug going around at the moment. It seems to then morph into a secondary bacterial infection. I think with an uncontrollable temperature and pain in the ear and throat I’d be visiting the GP tomorrow if I were you, you may need antibiotics.
I hope you feel better soon.

A fever is a normal symptom of your body fighting an illness, if paracetamol and ibuprofen are reducing it then you can just keep up that regime, doing paracetamol then 2 hrs later ibuprofen, up to maximum dose of each.

NHS have guidance on when to call 111 www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-adults/

Ineffable23 · 09/03/2025 19:39

Well it sounds like you have tachycardia in addition to a fever, and 40 is very high. So definitely worth at least seeing an out of hours GP I think. Editing: (or a GP tomorrow if that's not viable?)

Really? Always? I’ve had some nasty viruses lately that have left me with a fever especially when the paracetamol has worn off. They’ve got better after a few days. I didn’t think to consult a doctor for them!

Isn’t a fever just the body fighting off an illness? Even for my 6 month old DS the advice was to only see a gp if it lasted more than 5 days.

Are you drinking plenty OP? Tachycardia can be a sign of dehydration

saveforthat · 09/03/2025 19:47

OK I may have been a bit overcautious there. I've had a lot of cancer treatment where a fever is a red flag. If you are usually fit and well it maybe best to look at NHS guidelines or call the non emergency number.

Yes I had this from my DD, fever of 40, throat infection (with all the ickiness!), bacterial conjunctivitis and double ear infection! It's awful, I went to the GP and they thought it was bacterial as it presented so.

I felt grossly unwell, and I sought help from the GP as was getting dehydrated, same with DD.

OP, I think you know how bad you feel and what you can cope with, if it is beyond that or pushing that limit then always seek medical attention.

Porcuporpoise · 09/03/2025 19:48

I would seek medical advice if I had a fever of 40 that either didn't respond to paracetamol or that lasted more than 3 days.

Thanks everyone. Just want some reassurance as im conscious not to waste nhs time. The timing couldn’t be worse I’m supposed to be going back to work tomorrow after a years Mat leaves. It looks a bit suspicious 👀. Will see how I feel in the morning I think I just need rest but so hard with two tiny children.

@Ceebee87 i had a very similar illness I’m sure the day i was due back after maternity leave too, a few years ago. I did end up on antibiotics and having an extra week off sick! With hindsight it was fine and no one was really bothered.

Porcuporpoise · 09/03/2025 20:03

I however returned from maternity leave on time, worked for 2 days then got food poisoning from a sandwich (cheese savory, hot June day, shudder) and then needed a week off 🤢

Porcuporpoise · 09/03/2025 20:03

Anyway yes, let that be the least of your worries.

user1496146479 · 09/03/2025 20:05

I had similar about 3 weeks ago! Fever of 39/40 for almost 5 days, barely controlled by meds.
Headache & exhaustion were horrible, worst I've ever felt!
Second week, sinus & cough.
Third week was still shattered. Starting to feel a bit more human now!
Lots of nasty bugs around

Tandora · 09/03/2025 20:07

As an adult I’d be concerned about a fever that high. Definitely make a gp appointment x

Needanewnamey · 09/03/2025 20:07

I would suggest you visit an out of hours/urgent care centre for medical attention tonight. How is your breathing?
