Deliveroo delivery and ID...

OK, yes, I'm being utterly unreasonable for using Deliveroo and not doing the walk to my local shop but it's Sunday and I'm already showered and in my pjs..

The driver turned up with my order which included an age restricted item. It's got a huge sticker on the bag - Under 25? Please be ready to show the driver your ID etc.

He asked for ID.

I gave him my DOB but he insisted on seeing ID and said I couldn't have the order until he'd seen it! So I fetched my driving licence and he actually checked it!

I'm fucking 50.

It happened last time I ordered from them a couple of months ago too - different driver.

Surely they only actually need to see your ID if they have reason to believe you're under 25? Or is this standard now?

I have the same and I'm 40. Think it's standard now, no common sense but hey ho

GreyCarpet · 09/03/2025 19:12

Thing is, you have to give your DOB when ordering. If you give the same DOB when the delivery arrives and you're obviously nowhere near 25, why do they need to ask for ID?

They only go up to 25 because to get round the issue of 15 year olds who might look 18.

I don't know why but it's really irked me!

It’s their policy 🤷‍♀️ Amazon are the same.

GreyCarpet · 09/03/2025 19:21

Fair enough. Don't put the under 25? sticker on it then!

I think their app makes them note details to confirm your age and asks confirmation they've seen ID

JustTryingToBeHappy · 09/03/2025 19:34

I had this yesterday, too. They legally have to do this. They're just doing what they are told, as annoying as it is, it's not up to the drivers to decide if someone is under or over 25 no matter how obvious it may be. I wouldn't risk losing my job either.

GreyCarpet · 09/03/2025 19:36

No, if that's the company policy then fair enough. But it seems ridiculous.

I had my ID ready for amazon when ordering alcohol, but the driver didn't ask for it. I must look very obviously my age 😂

GreyCarpet · 09/03/2025 19:38

And the 25 thing is already in place to protect them against having to judge whether someone is over 18 or not because that's the legal age.

I get it's not the drivers fault but still.

I got an email from Just Eat the other day to say they would be doing similar. I think it’s fine. They have multiple deliveries, often in the dark, and are just following company rules - it’s not hard to give them the ID.

Yes you may have given your date of birth, but if you were underage, you would give a false one as you are attempting to buy age restricted items. It may seem ridiculous to you, but it’s a blanket policy, not about individuals.

I went food shopping in Waitrose the other day and I bought some wine. I was doing a self checkout and it ask for an age verification. This young chap comes over and says if I have any ID on me. Then looked at me and said oh never mind. I’m 43 and I laughed and said he should really just gone through with it and check my ID😂

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 09/03/2025 20:12

My dh (54) was nearly refused our Ocado because the driver asked for ID and dh thought the driver was making a hilarious joke and so didn't show him any ID and didn't understand why he wasn't being given the shopping. It was all a bit tense.

TY78910 · 09/03/2025 20:24

Well the app states to have your ID ready. I can imagine there will be people out there that looooove causing trouble and will reach out to Deliveroo to snitch and say 'they didn't check my ID'!! And the repercussions are probably severe so it's easier to do it for everyone than trying to pick and choose every time at the risk of having your account removed.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 09/03/2025 20:42

Mu understanding on ID for under-25 being requested was to ensure that under-18s couldnt purchase alcohol. I don't think there is any legal requirement for significantly and clearly much older than 25 to be checked. So this is companies implementing their own blanket policies. A little bit similar to the move towards photo id being the only acceptable form of personal identification. Whereas that is not what the government list states user id requirements. I had issues during lockdown with a valid paper Driving Licence and an expired passport. So no current photo id. Organisations who had no right to insist on current photo id made my life very difficult. I think companies are overstepping.
