I have only ever had one dog who was a terrier, and he was a typical terrier in that he would bark all the time no matter how much I tried to train him. He hated cats, would bark any time someone walked past the house and would bark at the TV a lot. This was despite extensive training and getting a behaviourist round. I am wanting something a bit quieter (!) and more affectionate this time around.

I work from home, and want it to be good around children. Ideally one that only needs less than an hour of walking per day and is low/no shedding. I have a pretty good sized garden if that helps too. A friend has a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who I adore, she is so sweet-natured and gentle and I would put up with the shedding for one of those, but the breed has so many health issues that it concerns me.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you

Lhasa Apso or Shih Tzu. Lhasas are a little bit bigger and a slightly different temperament but they are both really great breeds. Don’t shed, need 30-60 mins exercise, good companions. Mine is not noisy at all, loves snuggles, enjoys play, but really happy to snooze for a lot of the day. They do need grooming. I keep mine at a fairly short coat so we have less tangles and things getting stuck. Fur is super soft and silky but can be a bit Velcro.

Dontletthebedbugsbite2 · 09/03/2025 17:27

Are you looking for a lap dog? If so what about a shih tzu? Incredibly affectionate- non shedding & none that I've known have been 'barky'. Also happy for a long walk or just chilling at home.

SmudgeButt · 09/03/2025 17:28

All dogs shed. We had dalmatians when I was growing up and no one could wear dark colours as there was too much hair and it was impossible to hoover up successfully.

And also I wouldn't recommend dalmatians as they are very territorial and will happily bite anyone they don't know well. No matter how well trained.

He likes to take panda outside in the sunshine.

Labrador

No lab I've ever known would be happy with less than an hour walking a day. Confused

That would be cruel to a dog breed that loves to be outdoors and active.

A rescue. And if you can't rescue in the UK consider a Portuguese rescue; despite Brexit it's still possible.

And in response to the customary pile on about 'forrin' dogs being feral brutes who carry umpteen deadly diseases, many are the result of their owners dying or being forced to give them up due to changing circumstances or because the parents were not neutered.

biscuitsandbooks · 09/03/2025 17:33

Why is everyone suggesting a Labrador? OP wants a low-energy, non-shedding dog Hmm

OP, I would look at miniature poodles.

EdithStourton · 09/03/2025 17:35

Whippet? Affectionate, sweet-natured, don't need much exercise, and provided you go for the sort bred for the show ring, often not too prey-driven either. They are IME terrible thieves though.

Whaleandsnail6 · 09/03/2025 17:36

I agree with suggestions of retired greyhound. We have had 2 and both have never barked, minimal shedding and happy with a run around the garden or private hired field and a couple of 20 minute walks a day.

Sweet, gentle and affectionate dogs too although can be quite independent and neither of mine have wanted to play with me or the kids, preferred to play alone so if you want a velcro or super playful dog may not be the choice for you.

Show cocker maybe. Definitely not a working strain, be very sure of that!
As with anydog you should be checking out the breed and what health tests the breed club recommend and finding a trustworthy breeder and be prepared to wait for the right one. But generally I think they ate a healthier and better looking dog than the king Charles.

Ours was walked all morning, had a quick nap, did an hour or so of agility training and then wanted another walk.

Yes, she's a show cocker. She shreds soft toys, shoes and carpets. And she's very barky.

I think you want a Havanese. And I think I want a lie down.

We’ve had a golden retriever, a Labrador and currently have a miniature poodle.

The poodle is the easiest dog you could wish for. She is intelligent, easy to train, loving and quiet. As a puppy she was so easy. She came from the breeder at nine weeks virtually housetrained. She didn’t chew anything, she settled at night straight away. She doesn’t shed.

After a Goldie and a lab, the poodle is so easy.

Beagle
Very good with kids
Despite what people who don't understand the breed think they only need walking once a day for between 30-60mins.
Anything more and they get overwhelmed.

Very healthy breed - few genetic issues.
Short hair but do shed

They take some understanding - you can't expect a beagle to behave like a non hound breed.

Our sleeps a lot

We left our Sunday roast on the kitchen table for 10 seconds……..it was a vegetarian lunch for dh and me.
We have always had whippets and we adore them. They do need plenty of exercise, though.

krustykittens · 09/03/2025 17:45

I am a terrier person through and through but I took a Havanese off a friend about three years ago when she was looking to rehome her pup, and I am madly in love! Much softer and sweeter than a terrier, zero prey drive so she walks beautifully off the lead, stays close to me all the time, showers me with love and affection, loves a squeeze, very obedient and has enough energy to keep up with the terriers on long walks. She is wonderful and if terriers are driving you crazy (I have two, so I know the struggle!) I would recommend a Havanese every time.

Triptraptrippytap · 09/03/2025 17:46

Don’t get a poodle cross. You can have everything you’ve always wanted in a dog with an actual poodle. The crosses bring with them surprises, very often they are mental.

We love Hungarian Vizslas, we’re on no.3
Ours have never barked and are really affectionate 🧡

I think my mums been unlucky. Hers is a nightmare! 😂
Barks constantly and scavenges for food all the time, she doesn’t get a minutes peace!

Aww no mine was so good, I absolutely adored her 😘

Ohyay · 09/03/2025 17:51

A whippet?
Team terrier here but this could be suited to your needs.
Potentially my next breed. That or a spicy chihuahua

Ohyay · 09/03/2025 17:52

Bischon frisè?
My friends is very versatile. Good little hiker also happy to snooze all day in a sunny window.
No shedding.

JBJ · 09/03/2025 17:54

Never had one myself, but my friend has always had Westies and they are fabulous little dogs, low shedding and none of hers have ever been typically terrier like in behaviour. Another friend has a miniature schnauzer who is just lovely and also doesn't shed a lot.

Definitely not a lab if you don't want hair!

I'm one of the hated bunch who has a poodle cross (my third one actually) and I love the lack of hair on every surface, compared to the collies and GSD I had in the past. Think my next dog will be a full poodle though.

Fatandnotsofabulous · 09/03/2025 17:56

Retired greyhound.
great with kids. Gentle . Low exercise need. Massively underrated. Please explore rescues first . Also with an adult dog you know what you are getting .

Sinkintotheswamp · 09/03/2025 17:57

Miniature poodle?

I've never had a dog but obsessively research them. (I want a Border one day).

Schoolsanightmare · 09/03/2025 17:58

We have a cavalier. Just a friendly and happy dog.
No health issues - no heart murmur or the horrible brain problem. You can get healthy ones you just need to go to a reputable breeder.
