To ask if you take a photo of your car before driving it?

Lately, as I've been working from home more often, I've noticed that a neighbour of mine, who works at a car repair garage and also car dealer, takes a photo of the front of his car every time before driving it (without fail). Since he parks right in front of my window, it's hard not to notice. I was curious if this is something others do as well, as I hadn't really thought about it before and I'm unsure of the reason behind it.

Is this a reasonable thing to do?

No.

Not of my own car, no. Can you ask him why?
I hired a car on holidays last year and I did a little video of it before we drove away, just in case they accused me of doing any damage that was there beforehand.

Does he have just one car? Or is he often in different cars from the dealership? Is he perhaps taking a photo to show proof that he has a temporary plate in the window on show or something similar?

I often take photos, but through the window to prove my handbrake is on 😂

I've never done it but when I was at my previous job I regularly parked in the same side road as a guy who always took photos of his car after he parked it. I presume as evidence it was fine when left in case damage occurred while he was away. He too worked for a nearby car dealership.

What? No. Confused Why would anyone do this?

Octavia64 · 09/03/2025 13:08

No.

Take photos of hire cars at start and end, yes

PeppercornAnn · 09/03/2025 13:22

Assuming it’s a work car, he may need to record personal vs business mileage. Taking a photo at the start and end place of each journey along with the odometer would be an effective way to do this.

No, but having returned to my car to find a massive dent in the side from a hit and run before, I can see why people do it.

I take a photo of my bike chained up in case it isn't there when I get back and I need to claim on my insurance. It has the correct style of lock etc.

I just don't trust insurance companies!

I do, in parking lots or on street parking. Got hit and run once while parked and insurance were difficult about it because there was no "before" photo showing how the car was before the hit. So now any time I park I take photos of anywhere it could be hit or dinged.

(I do suffer from anxiety, and a lot of people I know don't bother. But it makes me feel safer)
