Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

The hotel lost our flowers
Best man took them the day before but when they went to get them for the table arrangements they had mysteriously disappeared

My bouquet also disappeared from the cake table later on, MIL very upset as I had given it her to put on her parents grave

It's amazing what people will nick from a wedding reception. I had several small floral displays on the tables at the reception. They were promised to close relatives afterwards but some of them mysteriously disappeared.

I also had a funky table plan that had all little people depicting bride, groom, male and female guests etc. That disappeared too. I suspect it was one of the groomsmen and his gf who were getting married the following week.

I had to go and tell everyone-including the bride-that my brother had (rightly-but oh shit) changed his mind.

Bride had norovirus - came to the ceremony and got married (quickly!) and then retired to hotel room for the rest of the day. They’re still married though, but such a shame for them.

I actually think things like the singing vicar make a great wedding! Very memorable for the guests at least, and if the B&G can laugh at it too then it makes for a fun atmosphere. In a similar vein, I went to a wedding once of an international couple where on the morning of the wedding they realised that they legally needed a translator into English, and for complicated reasons they had to use the bride's mother, whose English was 'quirky' at best. There were a number of cracking moments, including calling the happy couple 'the bride and the broom', and happily announcing 'this marriage will last for 6 months!'. We were all in tears silently giggling near the back, and luckily the bride and groom were too.

In less fun things, at one wedding the groom passed out drunk after the meal and was carried to the hotel room. The bride carried on at the party with a face like absolute thunder. And at another wedding, the best man knocked a bottle of red wine all over the front of the bride's dress. She was devastated.

Bride late to the church as in all the excitement of leaving home with the bridesmaids/family, the dog escaped and spent half an hour galloping up and down the street outside while loads of well dressed people tried to catch him!

Poppymeldrum · 09/03/2025 12:53

The bride punched the groom so hard, she knocked him out

She was tiny-she struggled to fill a size zero dress, was about 5'2 and had a trail of 'crazy exs' behind her

He was 6',built like a brick outhouse (but a huge softy) and was madly in love with her (god knows why-shes a very nasty woman)

I was standing on the balcony, looking down and I saw him say something to her,she picked up the hem of her dress ran up the garden and punched him

He went down like a sack of potatoes and I ran to get help as she walked away

Her family didn't even glance up,we where all trying to make sure he was OK (he was) and as he managed to get up,she dragged him off for their first dance

She was watching over his shoulder the whole time,to make sure we where all admiring her and threw a tantrum because I'd nipped off to the loo

I'm sure she would have punched me too but I just gave her the same look I gave my children if they played up when they where young and she backed off

We went to leave as it was turning into a shitty evening and she chased us to give us cupcakes (that where as grotty as the rest of the food) and we left

Loads of people went to message the groom to see if he was OK (and offers of help to get away from her) only to be found they'd all been blocked

Never saw either of them again-shes cut his world to her family, forced him to give up his hobbies/friends and claiming benefits (she forced him to give up work and become her carer)

This was just shy of 10 years ago

I hope he's got out but doubt it

The groom went home after the registry office, so the bride hosted the reception herself.

Why?

itstooorangeyforcrows · 09/03/2025 12:54

Some years ago a relative had The Wedding Where Time Stood Still.

They were very unlucky with the weather, it absolutely pelted down. All the photos had to be taken indoors. Unfortunately, timings hadn't been worked out very well, and the weather also meant that during the (overly long) gap between the afternoon and evening receptions everyone was just left sitting around, squashed round little tables in a very small bar area. There wasn't even the option to nip out for some fresh air as it was raining so hard. And there was an overly stiff and formal feel to the whole day (imho anyway) which didn't fit with my relative's personality at all, it had all been what their spouse wanted. With that plus the 'cooped up' nature of the reception it was one of the most boring days I have ever spent, hands down.

After all that, the marriage didn't even last...

Pancakeflipper · 09/03/2025 12:54

My parents did once attend the wrong wedding. They got the wrong venue (the place they wanted was very similar name to the one they went to). Days before Sat Nav, mobiles etc..

They had to sit through the service (twigged it was very very wrong when the bride appeared).
Had to grab their card and gift and exit quickly.

Became family folklore. Whenever they said they were off to a wedding, one of my siblings would always chirp up with "anyone you know?

TwistedWonder · 09/03/2025 12:54

Not went wrong exactly but I went to a wedding that took place at the same time as England were playing at Euros match and pretty much every man stayed in the pub watching the match rather than coming to the church.

CrumpledInkBlott · 09/03/2025 12:54

Two . One wedding the Grandad died on the journey up to the wedding .

The other the best man was two drunk to read the cards ( when it was a thing ) He was chosen over my husband to be best man as he was deemed to be more sophisticated by the bride so that was a bit of Karma .

TheSandgroper · 09/03/2025 12:55

@Fluffyholeysocks no, the toilets did not back up before the reception. They backed up halfway through the reception. At about 8 pm ish. On a long weekend. In the days of needing to find and use a public phone.

So pleased it wasn’t my wedding.

MayaPinion · 09/03/2025 12:55

Went to a wedding where most of the best man’s speech was taken up with him talking about how his uni room was next door to the groom’s and how he could hear them shagging all the time. Everyone was cringing.

TwistedWonder · 09/03/2025 12:56

Another wedding the best man was absolutely paralytic drunk and got his dick out at the reception

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2025 12:56

My Grandma fell a few hours before my brothers wedding and my dad took her to A&E. It was pre mobile phones days so we couldn't keep in touch to see if they would make it to the wedding or not. They did arrive just in time and she was fine.
A one of DH's family members weddings the MOB had a nasty dog and it was likely to bite someone when Bride etc were getting ready as it tended to kick off if there were lots of people in the house. Unfortunately it got loose just as everyone was leaving and bit the brides Grandad (who was due to give her away) he bravely wrapped a tea towel around his hand and tried to carry on but by the time they arrived at the church it was obvious he couldn't and someone had to take him to hospital. DH was asked to step in and give the bride away, rather misogynistic as The Bride had closer female family members but MOB insited it had to be a man. He did it and Grandad was able to make it to The Reception and do the speeches, which DH was very happy about!

BanditoShipman · 09/03/2025 12:57

Poor young lady collapsed and died at the reception while dancing. Was so sad for everyone.

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 09/03/2025 12:58

I forgot the one where the bride's parents stayed for the wedding, came to the reception for all of five minutes and then left "to get back to the dogs" so there was no father of the bride speech and empty chairs at the top table. Bride cried for a bit but then wiped her eyes and enjoyed her evening.

NotDarkGothicMama · 09/03/2025 12:58

One where the bride was late because the car had driven her to the wrong church. Us bridesmaids were standing outside the actual church, feeling worried as she'd left before us (our taxi didn't show up!), when the wedding car screeched round the corner at top speed, with bride waving her bouquet at us. So funny in retrospect, but the groom was already nervous!

TheWorminLabyrinth · 09/03/2025 12:59

HolidayHappy123 · 09/03/2025 12:53

Why?

He didn't really want to get married, just went along with it because she did. She knew he wouldn't come to the reception, he wanted to go home and game. She told people the reason was that he "didn't like crowds".

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/03/2025 13:00

The brides dad owned a very expensive car and ferrying around everyone all morning to hair appointments etc. He was also the driver for the couple to the venue. When everyone was ready he took the bridesmaids to the church intending to come back for the bride, only he ran out of petrol and had left his phone behind so poor bride was all alone wondering where he was! Eventually someone, a neighbour or friend, went to pick her up a white work van and collected stressed Dad on the way. They had to hop out of the back of the van at the church and she ripped her dress. After the ceremony for laugh people decorated the work van and the driver drove the bride and groom to the venue in it, so they have lots of photos of them beside a dirty work van, they made the best of the day.

ohyesido · 09/03/2025 13:00

I attended one where only half the guests got fed, mix up with the number of people attending the wedding breakfast. Very awkward when they started clearing away the starters not knowing that 30 or so had not yet been served.

Jellycatspyjamas · 09/03/2025 13:00

My friend had a very small wedding, close family and a couple of friends. It was in a very informal venue where the guests kind of gathered around the couple during the ceremony.

The celebrant did a homily during the ceremony talking about how beautiful the wedding rings were and how life comes along causing scratches and dents. The idea was to remind the bride and groom to nurture their marriage however he continued the ring analogy too far, telling the groom he should “polish her ring” on a regular basis.

Cue very adolescent sniggering from those gathered closely around bride and groom.

jackstini · 09/03/2025 13:01

Pp reminded me of this one

We had chocolate covered strawberries on the side of the dessert

I went to say hello to some friends and one of the 1 year olds wiped chocolatey hands straight down the front of my wedding dress
Her mum was horrified bless her, but my bridesmaids whizzed me back to the room, took off the skirt and washed it in the basin with hand soap then dried it out fast as they could with hairdryers! (Thank goodness it hit the organza skirt and not the satin embellished bodice...)

I was back at the reception 20 mins later and the relief on my friend's face was palpable!

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/03/2025 13:01

Nothing too bad, the really tight MOB had provided soo little food there was nothing left for the last few tables at the buffet. We went home early.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 09/03/2025 13:03

The groom was gay and very much in the closet, and everyone but the bride knew.
