Weddings you went to where things went wrong?

Please can you share any times you attended a wedding where things went awry. I’m just keen to avoid any possible issue.

The only one I can think of is where the bride was two hours late. Apparently her family were just really exacting with the make up artist and had a lot of the make up redone/touched up.

We were sat in the Church for aaaaages. It meant that the drinks reception/evening meal was really rushed as the bride and groom really prioritised the dancing.

We went to a "bring a dish wedding". Everyone over catered, and so much food went to waste. Literally, they could have fed everyone all day again. The B&G filled their freezer, but couldn't give any food away as it had been out all day.

Same wedding, guests who'd arrived the previous evening went out for a pub meal the night before (at our own expense). Pub had an offer of a free bottle of wine with 2 adult main courses. As I was leaving with my wine, the bride snatched it out of my hands and said "we're keeping the wine for the wedding tomorrow". It was my wine!

Thejackrussellsrule · 09/03/2025 20:56

Our original wedding venue double booked the reception venue, they told us 2 weeks before and admitted that we'd booked first but the other wedding had more day guests! They suggested a marquee, I said I didn't want a tent, they said it was a lined marquee, I said I didn't want a frilly lined tent!
Miraculously, we managed to find another venue, the original venue paid compensation and we upgraded our food package. We had to ring everyone about the change as this was 1993 and ore Internet!

Went to one where the bride passed out right before the vows (in front of everyone) and had to be rushed to ane (luckily she was fine and was a mixture of stuff) she came back to find everyone had eaten the buffet food and not saved any for her and the new husband

One that sticks in my mind for all the wrong reasons. I had only met them once before he was a friend of exh.

Everything was filmed.
Was all in a hotel and was very loud, kids screaming through the ceremony.
Food was ham, coleslaw and what looked and tasted like tinned potatoes (one person on our table had glass in their coleslaw). Nothing else, no dessert or anything.
The speeches were awful and all revolved around her farting.
There was a massive fight between both sides.
Bride threw up from booze.

On the way out they were selling the video for £10 each.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/03/2025 21:03

Groom's family stole all the money left as gifts in cards during the reception.
Another one we ended up waiting for about 2 hours outside on a cool, windy day with no seating. Lots of women in heels desperate to sit down and we weren't allowed into the marquee u into the married couple arrived! Elderly people ended up going off to sit in cars, find a pub etc as nowhere to sit.

stayathomer · 09/03/2025 21:03

We thought my dad wouldn’t be well enough to be at the wedding but he suddenly picked up (he was terminally ill and we’d rushed the wedding to have him there so it was a big thing!)

on a lesser note I put on weight and couldn’t eat dinner as I couldn’t breathe!

Lightningrain · 09/03/2025 21:14

I went to a wedding where the bride was sick all down her dress. Lucky towards the end of the evening so a lot of people had already left or were too inebriated to notice her outfit change.

My friend went to one where it was outside, in the UK, in April. It was about 6C! No inside accommodation. Only a a marquee (unheated) for the reception. She told me that people kept going out to their cars to run the heater for a bit to try to warm up.

I went to one last June in a marquee. It was absolutely bloody freezing. Every female was wearing their partner’s suit blazer over summer dresses with their teeth chattering. It was a nice day weather wise but Christ in the evening it was freezing. There were candles on the table and people were taking it in turns to warm their hands.

I find that a strangely puritan attitude; it's a lighthearted quip, not a reading from 'The Joy of Sex'. As for children, either they'll understand it or they won't, as with anything else they'll encounter in life.

Obviously teenagers will understand it and will be aware that married couples have sex. They just won't want to hear about their mum being 'banged' by their dad, especially in front of a whole load of relatives and friends. It's very weird that you don't understand that.

Bride's car broke down on the way to the church, on the motorway. She and her father (in December) had to get out of the car and climb the embankment to wait for repair service. Guests thought she was just a bit late, until we came out of the church after the ceremony to see an AA van and a police car! AA had fixed the car, then followed to church and onto reception, to make sure no more problems. Police had turned up because they were causing a distraction on the motorway and then escorted them the rest of the way. (I think both AA mechanic and police were ending a shift and stayed on in their own time.) Great wedding.

Our neighbour's daughter had a similar story 30 years ago. Was leaving for her wedding from her parents farm, from which the only road out was onto a Scottish dual carriageway notorious for traffic jams. It was at a total standstill in the direction she needed to go. A police car going in the opposite direction saw the wedding cars stuck in the jam and turned round to force a path for them through the jam and escort them to the church! A layer of wedding cake and bottles of whisky were dropped into the police station the next day by her parents.

TBF @AllProperTeaIsTheft There was a bit of a drip feed by the poster who originally posted this anecdote. When it was originally posted there was no mention of the fact that B&G were in their 50s with teenage children. It could have been a good gag under different circumstances.

MagnusCanis · 09/03/2025 21:28

I almost inadvertently sexually assaulted the bride at one a few years ago.

I'm no fan of weddings anyway, I had to drive so couldn't drink much and other than my DP I'd only ever met one person attending, so I didn't have high hopes of the day but in all fairness the people were all nice, the venue was stunning and the weather was beautiful... but I digress.

Early on at the reception we were all sat around outside on the rattan furniture drinking prosecco when the bride did her rounds of the tables to thank everyone for coming, or whatever. I had my arm on the arm of my chair, fingers over the side. For some reason she stood so close to my chair that she actually pinned my fingers against it with the tops of her thighs. There was nothing I could do. I had to sit there, my hand trapped in such a position that I was unable to move it without almost certainly touching something I really really shouldn't, and make small talk for what seemed like a week😳

Popettypop · 09/03/2025 21:29

Went to one in a very posh hotel. Wedding was on a Friday.
During the service a lorry arrived (delivery or bin lorry not sure). The lorry parked right outside the room the ceremony was being held and left engine running for ages. You could not hear the registrar nor hear the bride and groom it was awkward AF.

Eventuality hotel staff sorted it and we all cheered when engine was turned off and ceremony resumed.

StScholastica · 09/03/2025 21:36

Our wedding venue had a premier league football team staying. Loads of them invaded / graced us with their presence at our evening reception. The men loved it. I hate football but I remember having a boogie with David Seaman who was the England Goalie at the time.
I was a bit put out that they kind of took the glory.....it was like "bride and groom who?" 😳

Keiththecatwithamagichat · 09/03/2025 12:58

I forgot the one where the bride's parents stayed for the wedding, came to the reception for all of five minutes and then left "to get back to the dogs" so there was no father of the bride speech and empty chairs at the top table. Bride cried for a bit but then wiped her eyes and enjoyed her evening.

This is like my in laws!! They left the wedding early because ‘the gins are better in our hotel’ so they went to drink there. MiL left wife while she was getting ready in the morning too, because her sister needed a taxi booking. The photographer ended up getting my wife into her dress!!

Barneysmomma · 09/03/2025 21:37

The night before our wedding it started to snow - heavily. Our witnesses live at the top of a hill that's notoriously slippery in the winter.
The following morning it had stopped snowing but there was 4inches of the stuff in our village. Luckily not a problem for us (4wd) but our witnesses couldn't get to the registry office.
The registry office were open surprisingky and said if you can get here we'll marry you but you need to bring witnesses- we can't supply any. We ended up ringing round the neighbours to drum up 2 emergency witnesses. I nearly ended up getting married in wellies.
It was a very lovely ceremony and certainly a memorable day!

Cheaply undercatered and ran out of food.

Yes been to one like this. Half the guests or more had absolutely nothing to eat. Us, toddler and cousin all had zero, was starving and spent the rest of the night contemplating leaving. I was young and polite then. If it was now I'd have just gone home or out hunting for a drive through. It sticks in my head as the shittest wedding I have ever been too unfortunately just because the entire night was moaning how hungry we was and trying to think how we could eat.

Inviting more guests than you can offord to feed or more guests than the venue can fit in. Also been to evening do where about 30 guests had to sit in a side annex sharing one sofa as we didn't fit in the hall. No idea what that reception was like as effectively impossible to get into the main venue room. When it finished we went in to say goodbye and they had FOUR tables and 150 guests! So about 70 people stood in the car park all night. However I'm sure both brides and grooms had a lovely time totally oblivious

Cel77 · 09/03/2025 21:42

The bride and groom had an argument before all their guests during the meal. She slapped him and ran to the toilets crying. Something to do with a teenage boy from his family bothering a teenage girl from her family. They kissed and made up during their first dance though. Her dad made a pass at me . When I think about it, it was horrid really. Early noughties.

StScholastica · 09/03/2025 21:42

My friend went to one where they had a tame owl fly up the aisle to deliver a ring or something, but a bridesmaid got all flappy and it got caught up in the bridesmaids hair. Poor owl.

ilovesushi · 09/03/2025 21:45

Our wedding cake was green. Lesson learned from this is put all requests/ instructions in writing. I ordered over the phone and the person on the other end heard "green" not "cream". I thought they seemed a bit hesitant, but couldn't figure out why. Guests thought it was a nod to DH's Irish roots. Gutted we never got the traditional photo of us with cake. Luckily I found it funny at the time and it tasted great.

ilovesushi · 09/03/2025 21:46

Another thing that got messed up was ordering taxis in advance. Make sure if they are for after midnight they you are really clear about which day you mean.

Bloom15 · 09/03/2025 21:47

I didn't get fed at one- and I was 8 months pregnant! They did a self serve buffet and tables were called up. But people just took what they wanted - meat, vegetarian etc. We were the last table and there were a handful of sweet potato wedges. I wanted to cry.

The table let me have the cakes that cake round though!

LavendersBlueeee · 09/03/2025 21:49

Went to a wedding where the bridesmaids hair caught fire. She was stood too close a large candle and her hair was fully up in flames before she realised. She had her hair down which caused the back of her dress to catch fire too, although that was only minor compared to her hair. Poor girl.

Jellytots1840 · 09/03/2025 21:51

Went to wedding of ex. He was wearing neck collar as he and fiancee were in a car crash a few days before the wedding. Order of Service cards were left behind and had to be fetched from house. Brides family didn't attend as they were Jehovah's Witnesses but MOB had made wedding cake that was rock solid and took loads of attempts to cut. MOG cornered me in Ladies to tell me what a disaster it was. Hotel lost key to room where their luggage was stored so they were late leaving for honeymoon, got diverted from Venice as unable to land due to plague of locusts (you really couldn't make it up!). To top it off photographer had accident with photos so we all had to turn up two weeks later at church to take more photos, however most of grooms male friends were playing cricket so didn't attend. Needless to say the marriage didn't last.
Also went to a friends wedding where brides married next door neighbour had been to school with married best man and they hadn't seen each other since then. Discovered in disabled toilets by Best Man's wife with Best Man's trousers round his ankles and they were getting "re-acquainted ". Best man's wife whacked brides next door neighbour round the head with handbag and stormed out followed by Best Man chasing her down the road, pulling his trousers up as he ran....

Supergirl1958 · 09/03/2025 21:57

I went to the evening reception of a wedding where the bride and groom had gone to a&e because the groom had acute alcohol poisoning from drinking a bottle of whisky the night before the wedding!!
