Concerned about daughter *in A&E*

Really worried about daughter.

She’s 15 for context. Woke me up about 2am- excruciating pain in middle of chest- really tearful saying her chest hurts more when she lays down or tries to take a deep breath. Gave OTC painkillers- tried distraction etc. Sat downstairs to see if painkillers helped. They didn’t. At 4am I brought her to A&E as she was beside herself in pain.
Triaged in Peads V quickly, ECG fine. Obs normal. Awaiting X-ray but I’ve asked if this could be linked to starting contraceptive pill a month ago (progesterone only). Doctor has pulled a face and he’s said it’s unlikely. No blood tests at this point, I’m worried that she potentially has a blood clot due to pain and where it is. I’m not great at being strong and firm but feel like this X-ray will come back clear and we will be sent home with muscular pain!l

Should I push further?

Yes. Insist on a d dimer.

CerealPosterHere · 09/03/2025 06:13

D dimer is a blood test. Dd had a massive pulmonary embolism at 21yo and wasn’t even on the pill. It was missed at her first a&e visit. Please push.

CerealPosterHere · 09/03/2025 06:14

The first visit they just did obs and an ecg and said she was fine.

a week later she woke up in the middle of the night with the exact symptoms your Dd has.

hopefully it isn’t. But the blood test should be raised if she has a clot. Then if raised they will scan.

what2dowith · 09/03/2025 06:14

Yes push op. Wishing your dd well 💐

CaptainFuture · 09/03/2025 06:15

Oh am so glad both first posts so knowledgeable. Ask for this @Unsure1899 hope all is OK.

CerealPosterHere · 09/03/2025 06:17

Muscular pain does not wake you up in the night. Don’t be fobbed off with that.

Millymoonshine · 09/03/2025 06:39

Is your dd tall and thin op?
Has she had a sudden growth spurt?
My dn had a pneumothorax at this age.
The symptoms sound similar.
Have they listened to your dd's chest?

They will diagnose a pneumothorax from the chest X-ray.

Are her oxygen levels ok?

She’s currently losing weight due to Afrid. Not tall- short like me!!

Oxygen levels are 96%.
Yes, doctor has listened to chest and hasn’t said anything so I’m assuming that’s positive!

Thanks all for responses! Glad I’m not being OTT! All was going speedy but we are still waiting for X-ray as they are in theatre currently! DD is autistic and is now desperate to go home and sleep!

By the time we got Dd to hospital the pain had subsided a bit, ie she wasn’t doubled over sobbing like she had been. I was wrongly reassured by that. Thinking she can’t have anything wrong with her if she was now kind of ok. I think the first time they fobbed us off they said it could be something called costochronditis (sp).

Gundogday · 09/03/2025 06:53

Hope all is ok. Glad you’re getting all the tests.

IncessantNameChanger · 09/03/2025 06:53

Best to stay I think. It will be full of sports injury in a few hours, this is possibly the quietest time to be there

GarlicStyle · 09/03/2025 06:57

Good to hear she's being well cared for.

If I may suggest a somewhat less dramatic possibility? You've said she's undereating due to ARFID. Oesophagitis is very common in anorexia, and one of the key symptoms is central chest pain. It can also make eating uncomfortable, which may be exacerbating her disorder.

The test's pretty uncomfortable (I had it last year) but at least the problem's easily fixed with a daily tablet. Fingers crossed for you both, whatever they find.

She does seem to have calmed/ quietened down. Just been brought round to X-ray as the day shift are starting but radiologist has come out and apologised and said we have to wait as he now has to go upstairs and go to theatre to relieve his colleague. Just a waiting game….

This is really interesting! THANK YOU! So little seems to be known about Afrid and that’s something I’ll suggest?
Sorry if I do appear to be dramatic, my first thought was the pain she was in and my second thought was the fact she had started the pill a month ago…

I might be wrong but I don’t think the progesterone only pill raises the clot risk. I know Dd can’t now take the combined pill due to her clotting risk but they said she could take a progesterone only one.

but like I said Dd had no risk factors for a clot, wasn’t on the pill, wasn’t overweight, doesn’t smoke, hadn’t been travelling.

I have since googled this and seen the same! It said on the side effects list to get medical help if any of the following were to happen…

Just to say I ended up in hospital on morphine shortly after starting progesterone contraception. I brought it up at the time and the Dr pulled a face then too. Funny enough he rudely questioned me over and over, 'Are you sure you're not pregnant' with a Hmm face when I said no, until I snapped and said, 'I know I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure you actually have to have sex to get pregnant' and I hadn't. So clearly something was showing up for him to be so dismissive about my lack of pregnancy, but he wouldn't attribute it to contraception either Hmm

I never did find out the cause but I remain convinced it was that.

irishbloodenglishparts · 09/03/2025 07:09

I had this with my son a couple of months ago, Horrendous pain, shortness of breath etc

Hospital were great - as in I didn't go to the nearest A&E as it's feral there but went to the one a bit further away that I know is better. He was seen immediately.

He had all the tests and all was fine. It turned out to be muscular - I had no idea that so much pain could come from nothing. I had honestly thought he was having a heart attack, his breathing had been laboured etc but with hindsight it could be that was panic.

Took him a few days of painkillers and it just went away.

Hopefully your daughter will be the same as it's really scary. Flowers

MargaretThursday · 09/03/2025 07:16

The Only time dh has been to the doctor in 30years was similar to that.
Turned out to be a virus that causes pain in the muscles? Down the centre of the rib cage.
Scary at the time but not dangerous and dealt with by anti-inflammatory medication.

He then gave it to me and was really ou4t out that I didn't worry about seeing the Dr as it was clearly the same thing!

EdithBond · 09/03/2025 07:29

Always better to be pushy in hospital, rather than risk being fobbed off. And you’re doing the right thing flagging the pill, as important the doctors have as much information as possible.

Decades ago, my sister had chest pains at 15 and it ended up being pericarditis.

My son had an undiagnosed ruptured appendix at 16. They originally suggested it may be Chrohn’s.

I really hope it’s nothing serious xx

Unsure1899 · 09/03/2025 07:29

Thank you all for the help and advice! So hard when your on your own and wondering if your doing/ have done the right thing!
X-ray looks ok- interestingly Doctor has agreed it could be Oesophagitis- not thinking it’s muscular but have also agreed to do blood test!
