When will CHB and maintenance stop for my 18 year old?

Hi, sorry it's not an AiBU but just wondering if anyone can tell me, I've got an 18 year old daughter in her final year of A levels at college, she sits her exams in May this year. When can I expect child benefit and maintenance from her dad to stop? Will it be the end of May?

Thank you

Mine did 3 years at college, so child benefit stopped the august of year 14, when he left sixth form. It did not continue to be paid, despite going to uni, until he was 20.

End August.

You can continue to receive Child benefit if your child is under 20 and stays in approved education or training.

Edited to add, not Uni, as another poster has said.

Edited

But not uni.
And not apprenticeships (at least post 18)
I think.

If she’s not doing another year of ‘approved education’ then both child benefit and maintenance will stop at the end of August

childmaintenancequestion · 08/03/2025 09:11

She isn't planning on going to uni this year, she wants to take a year out and gain some relevant hands on experience for the uni course she's interested in applying for. She's looking into applying for relevant job roles that will get her this experience to start in the summer (she's also considering an apprenticeship type role in a similar field). I'm guessing none of this counts as approved education? So it will stop end of August?

Always was end of august (2nd September rings a bell) though I wasn't claiming by the time mine hit that age due to the income threshold

End of August the year they finish approved post 16 education. Can go up to end of August after they turn 19 if they have been doing a third year in a level three or similar course at college. It doesn’t continue for paid apprenticeships.

I’m looking at my daughter’s ending this August too so I’m hoping she can find enough work to support herself from then. I find this bit of having children the most expensive time as government help for the parent stops before they are fully self sufficient. Probably another outdated system from when 16 year olds could leave school and start working whereas now they are meant to stay in education so look for full time work a few years after finishing school!
