Have we gone too far the other way

Fullofquestions1 · 07/03/2025 21:40

This isn’t directed at a single group in particular. I am using examples that seem to have had the biggest change to me.

When I was growing up life was quite strict I was never smacked but I certainly avoided going against what I was told especially at school. Peers at school may have been more cheeky and rebellious than me but nothing to compared to how things are today.

LGBTQ certainly wasn’t as accepted or people treated fairly you only have to watch old programs to see how far things have come.

My point/question is while some of these changes are positive and absolutely the right thing have we now gone too far and as a result? Are we too PC and too lenient?

Examples?

GretchenWienersHair · 07/03/2025 21:47

I’m confused. Especially about the LGBTQ part. Are you saying it was better when people weren’t treated fairly?

blacksax · 07/03/2025 21:48

You are talking about two entirely different issues here. One is about good behaviour and abiding by the rules at school, and the other is about the acceptance (or otherwise) of people's gender / sexual preferences.

Why are you posting about them both together?

This thread is giving me big deja-vu vibes by the way

frogsoutofthebag · 07/03/2025 21:48

I don't think in general we are treating people too fairly, no.

Is the deja vu in relation the the one about “oppression” vs famine?

No, I don't think so.

No, I don't think so.

Cor blimey, there are a lot of these sorts of threads popping up lately then!

SueSuddio · 07/03/2025 21:52

So I agree, that change has positives and negatives. We question authority figures now and don't give them the same respect and deference. Like the police and like teachers - this is good and bad, bad in that it undermines the authority for them to get on with their job, like at school if parents are turning on them for trying to discipline their children.

I also found myself rolling my eyes at an 'Out and Proud' exhibition in rainbow colours outside my local museum. I reminded myself that 20 years ago as a teen I would've punched the air at this in solidarity, now I think, 'aren't we past that already? Who gives a shit who you are or want to sleep with? Does it really make you special?' an opinion I see often on social media.

Yeah, I think we can get past a point with PC stuff for sure.

No, I don't think so.

It's giving "are we becoming too woke" or "is the PC brigade gone too far" type vibe, I fear , though I could be wrong.

HauntedBungalow · 07/03/2025 21:53

What overall pattern are you discerning in the trajectory of societal attitudes to these entirely unrelated matters you are occupying your intently forensic mind with?

offmynut · 07/03/2025 22:14

I think we have come a long bloody way with some things and its great.
Other things we have fucked up.
But if it dont effect me i dont care.

Fullofquestions1 · 07/03/2025 22:19

The LGBTQ reference was used because I was thinking of pronouns and how some people can be very offended and accuse people of abusive for using to wrong pronouns and things such that. It’s fantastic we are more accepting and people are treated more fairly.

I don't think my deja-vu is of a recent thread though.

Given that being gay is still illegal in some countries, no, I don’t think we’re ‘past that’ already. As this thread proves, LGBTQ people are still experiencing discrimination (and oppression).

OhCalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 08/03/2025 08:24

There's still a long way to go with attitudes towards being gay. It's also important to remember we have an incredibly diverse society which includes ethnic groups who will never be as accepting. I have friends who still have criminal records for being gay and chose not to get them removed as a testament of what society used to be like for gay people but I do sometimes think the issue has become over complicated. For example I don't fully understand why being assexual has now been lumped in with the LGBQIABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPetc tag.

Jade520 · 08/03/2025 08:37

Free access to the internet and SM are a large part of what has gone too far for kids today - including kids believing they are trans. There was none of it when I was growing up and we were so much better for it. Kids might be goths or punk if they felt 'different' but they didn't think trying to become the opposite sex was the answer.

Parents are also now often busier than ever, more exhausted than ever, struggling with the high cost of living. Many see their children as their friends, think everything they do is amazing and that they can do no wrong.

Yes, so why don't LGBTQ groups focus on these countries then? Gay rights have been achieved and normalised to a huge extent in the UK. Nothing is perfect, groups will always discriminate against others but largely it's never been better & you get to a point where actually you begin to switch off.

I suppose it's easier to put on a rainbow exhibition of victimhood in a tolerant and liberal country like the UK than somewhere where it's actually need like a scary middle eastern regime.

BarneyRonson · 08/03/2025 12:40

I am so bored of celebrating gay pride. I think there’s widespread fatigue about it, it’s monotonous and feels box ticking. At what point can we get over it and get on with other things again.

What’s wrong with that? 🤷‍♀️
