To think this is remains of asbestos in this bin? With photo

I’ve attached a photo. We’ve got concerns our neighbour has been using our bin, it’s one meant for garden waste. Do the white bits look like remains of asbestos? It seems to have a fluffy look to it and not sure why anything white would be in the bin.

The only asbestos I’ve seen was in sheets, so would look like broken up white wood.

@DustyLee123 what do you reckon this white stuff is then?

No idea, I’d say if I did!

DiscoBeat · 07/03/2025 13:57

Asbestos would be grey sheets. Do the have a cat? The litter would make dust like that.or have they been decorating?
Cheeky buggers,I would be livid - I like to keep my bin clean!

DiscoBeat · 07/03/2025 13:58

Could also be flour?

NotGonnaSayThisTime · 07/03/2025 14:01

Asbestos comes in many forms. Only way to know is very it tested

@DiscoBeat no cat but they do have a very white/light coloured stone gravel on their drive. It’s like it’s mixed in with the grass that’s in there too.

Looks more like fibreglass insulation to me. The white streaks could be off plasterboard.

KrisAkabusi · 07/03/2025 14:05

It's just dawned on me that you don't mention that they are doing any building work. Why would your mind jump to asbestos?

JaneJeffer · 07/03/2025 14:06

Gypsum

SackChute · 07/03/2025 14:07

Google gravity lock op. It will save it happening again.

This,

Don’t ask people on Mumsnet to identify potentially hazardous waste for you

SquishyGloopyBum · 07/03/2025 14:19

If it's a garden waste bin is it not just mould?

JaneJeffer · 07/03/2025 14:19

Has nobody said lick it yet? Sad

Strawberryfruitcorner · 07/03/2025 14:20

Is it not mould if it’s fluffy?

UpUpUpU · 07/03/2025 14:27

Mould

anyuary · 07/03/2025 14:31

I would say it looks like fibreglass like you see between boards in a loft or whatver. Is it yellowish?

LogicVoid · 07/03/2025 14:33

Get it cleaned (there are often services that offer this) and a bin lock.

MariaDingbat · 07/03/2025 14:41

It would be unusual for asbestos to be in that form. Usually the type you get in houses would be in plasterboard and it's brown and it tends not to fluff like that. That looks like something organic, could it be flour if they were using your garden bin for their food waste?

Binbarr · 07/03/2025 14:51

@MariaDingbat thanks. It looks exactly the same colour as the small stones on their driveway so I wonder if it’s just mixed in some of that with some of the lawn cuttings. I guess it’s true that you wouldn’t smash it up you’d just dispose of asbestos in bigger pieces. It seems more like a dusty texture. Not that I have touched it !

I work as an asbestos analyst and lab tech and even I'm not going to tell you yes or no. If you want to find out for certain, get it tested.
