Cameras in a house while working?

Hi

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I feel uncomfortable working while being watched.

I am a carer in the community and I have noticed that there is a camera in the living room pointing to the person who I am looking after. At first I thought it was there for when they were on their own and I understand this is a good idea. However, the persons partner has made a few comments to make me realise they are watching from another room.

Is this allowed? Should I say something?

Thanks.

Not sure if it is allowed but I think it’s a good idea and you hear many things about bad treatment by some carers.

It would be different if you found a hidden camera, but a camera on full view that you know is there I can't see an issue with.

I did homecare for a long time and I just did my job under the assumption that there was always a camera present. Obviously I never knew if there was or not.

Im not surprised with all the cases of abuse and not just from staff.

Id work under the assumption as a career or even baby sitter there was likely to be a camera.

We have internal ones downstairs livingroom and kitchen pretty much covers all downstairs entrances. Burglars tend to stop thinking of cameras once they enter the property and get loose with their face covering.

There should be no problem with this.

I'd certainly have cameras up if any vulnerable loved one of mine needed care.

It's no reflection on you and nothing to take personally.

purplepie1 · 07/03/2025 14:00

You're all right. Just because I wouldn't do something wrong there are others who wouldn't think twice about abusing someone or stealing something.

Sad world we live in that some carers who are supposed to care do not.

Thinking about it I would probably install cameras if it was my relative.

Thanks for your responses.

We have cameras up in my mother's house. They are there so that eg we can check that she's made it up the stairs to bed safely and if her fall alarm has gone off because she's fallen or because she's pressed it in her sleep. We tell any new carers or cleaners, but we don't sit there watching. Occasionally we will see one of her carers on camera but we're not spying on them.

We installed Ring cameras to keep an eye on our elderly relative, but we suggested to her wonderful carer that she switched them off all the time she was there. She never did switch them off and so we never viewed footage when she was there, in fact I deleted it immediately.
I think it's wrong that someone is viewing you at work 😞

Imbusytodaysorry · 07/03/2025 14:11

@purplepie1 o actulay think having cameras just incase is one thing .
But sitting in another room Watching you like it’s a tv programme I wouldn’t feel comfortable with. .

WaltzingWaters · 07/03/2025 14:14

I completely understand. I worked as a nanny for a family who had cameras in most rooms. I hated it as it does just feel a bit awkward, but also understood why they wanted them up. I just got on with it, as I would without the camera there, but I knew of course the moment they would watch me would be the 1% of time I checked my phone or blew my nose, and not the other 99% of time I was playing with the children!

Growlybear83 · 07/03/2025 14:16

I don't see a problem. I only wish I'd had cameras when my mum was at the mercy of caters who stole some of her jewellery.

InveterateWineDrinker · 07/03/2025 14:31

I'm about to install a camera at a relative's place because the carers aren't doing their jobs.
