Honestly find news so depressing that I just cannot.

Love watching his new policies. But cannot stand Starmer wish he would step down and disappear. Vile man.

It's comments like this which disengage me as well. There is no sensible conversation any more, everything is so polarised, no one actually discusses the political detail with any nuance, it's how they "feel" about someone and it colours everything, it's how we end up with people like Trump.

She did say she liked his policies which isn't just "feelings"
And she probably finds Starmer vile due to his policies.

ihith · 07/03/2025 08:14

@Mightymoog she said she wants him to disappear and step down, it's all overly emotional and hysterical, as I say, we can't just have civilised discussions any more with words like "vile" being thrown around, they've lost all meaning now, we've lost all rationality.

I stopped watching the news years ago.
Our nervous systems aren't developed too cope with wall to wall trauma and stress every day beaming from our phones and TV.
Many of the stressful parts of my life can't be controlled but switching off the news in any format and going for a walk instead can be.

Then if you examine the different biases of the various news organisations, including the BBC and see how inaccurately it can be reported, the manipulation of the consumers becomes apparent.

Sorry, love whose policies? do you mean trump?

Snugglemonkey · 07/03/2025 11:13

I used to watch the news and read news every day. Brexit and covid put me off. Trump finished me really. My mental health is a lot better with less engagement.

Great isn't it.
I can't believe I used to give so much headspace/ worry/ anger/ sadness to finding out about stuff that I can do nothing about and in the great majority doesn't actually impact my real every day life,
Weird that some people think an active choice is ignorant as I find it the logical response.

squashyhat · 07/03/2025 11:19

I gave up watching when we left the EU. Donkeys led by donkeys.

NeverHadHaveHas · 07/03/2025 11:24

I was an avid listener of the rest is politics and the rest is politics US podcasts. Gave up listening to both on December as I was becoming so anxious. I feel so much better for it.

Can I ask in what way keeping abreast of the news actually enhances your life?
Your actual, real day to day life?

It leads me to understand more about what’s going on in the world and I think this helps me to avoid making glaring mistakes - such as voting for Brexit, say. If people have little to no knowledge of what’s happening in the world they are more likely to fall for politician’s sound bites and bluster. I also believe that if more American people kept informed about what’s going on - and really thought things through - they would be less likely to support Trump and that would enhance all our lives.

TonTonMacoute · 07/03/2025 16:26

Yes, unfortunately DH hasn't, so I still get regular apoplectic updates on the latest headlines from him!

Isittimeformynapyet · 07/03/2025 16:30

Eight8eight · 07/03/2025 07:49

No. I like to be informed and understand what is happening in the world.

I'm watching far less.

Even if I watch the news I still don't understand what's going on in the world.

PinkiOcelot · 07/03/2025 16:32

I haven’t actually watched the news since the COVID pandemic.

Mightymoog · 07/03/2025 16:37

@Trezshereyeland

"If people have little to no knowledge of what’s happening in the world they are more likely to fall for politician’s sound bites and bluster."

If people have no idea what's going on in the world they won't have a clue what politicians are saying so won't be falling for anything.

I also believe that if more American people kept informed about what’s going on - and really thought things through - they would be less likely to support Trump and that would enhance all our lives.

well they voted based on what they read/ saw and that's incredibly arrogant and patronising to think they only needed to be better informed ( also known as have the same opinions that you do)

PrimitivePerson · 07/03/2025 16:50

The thing I resent here is the assumption that I'm ignorant or burying my head in the sand for not obsessively following the news. I'm well informed enough when it comes to voting and I haven't missed a single election in the 32 years I've been eligible to vote. As I also said earlier, I'm a curious and engaged person who reads very widely, so I'm not willing to accept that I'm some sort of clueless moron for not hoovering up news.

Same

HorrorFan81 · 07/03/2025 17:13

Yes. Before the election i was watching all the news and listening to political podcasts. Literally avoided all of it since, it gives me anxiety

As tempting as it is to switch off, we should all keep track of the bullshit...

Honestly there is no need to keep track of the bullshit.
I've not for a few years now and it has brought only positives to my life,
I genuinely can't think of a negative effect of willfully avoiding the news for me personally
