Why can’t I find a tent to comfortably fit 5 people?

Any campers got any advice?
I am looking for a tent for two adults, two pre teens (boys) and one teenager.(girl)

Looking for:
All in one tent (teen doesn’t want to camp alone)
3 rooms - must fit 2 in each room. Needed for privacy for teen DD.
Nightfall bedrooms
built in groundsheet.

All the tents I’ve found with 3 rooms, the sizes 2 of the rooms have been 120cm wide. How can you even fit a double air bed into that? Air beds are 137cm wide 🫤
I don’t get it.

really hoping someone can give me a recommendation - it’s driving me mad looking!

Our Berghaus Telstar fall is great, there’s 6 of us & a dog. Lots of room, 3 or 4 bedrooms depending how we put up the inners. Blackout which works. It was expensive, got it on offer. Lots of good second hand bundles available which may be more budget friendly. The Berghaus Air are good as are Decathlon air ones.

Look for a tent marked as 6XL. 3 bedrooms
But more space than a standard 6 person.

This is what we have. Three bedrooms but the zips open so if there are less of us, we have more space. We can get 3 double air beds wide.

this one has great reviews, Berghaus are a good make tent, and each of the large end rooms can be subdivided into two - looks good?

We have a slightly smaller, non-air version of this and it's great. It doesn't have quite the config you need, OP, but as a brand/style I'd recommend them.

Do you have a big Go Outdoors or similar near you? It's really useful to go and see some set up.

We have a Royal Atlanta 8 man tent (the Royal Leisure is the newer version).

There are two sleeping areas with a curtain divider down the middle of each one (so 4 bedrooms). You could easily put 2 adults in one end and 3 teenagers in the other end. Or, if the teenagers really want to be separate, the living space in the middle is huge, so your DS could sleep in there. Integral groundsheet and carpet so the living part is super clean, warm and comfortable.

Price is around £400. Ours has lasted a decade in all weathers.

This looks good- will look into it more and if there are any second hand! Thank you for the suggestion!

Annoyingly the nearest is about 45 mins away in a different county but the route is often hellish and prone to awful traffic delays at weekends

Any who goes in which?
pre teens won’t sleep alone in another tent and are far too immature to do so.
Teenager doesn’t want to be alone.
Teenager certainly doesn’t want to be sharing with her two annoying brothers and trying to look after them whilst we are in another tent!?

Split the adults up with the children surely.

I think you’re looking for quite lux requirements for a tent, so that will come with a price tag. Hopefully a 2nd hand one will rear its head. Can you rent tents??

ForeveraBluebird · 06/03/2025 23:03

Look for an old Cabanon on eBay, huge , made of canvas , lovely tents. The new models are really expensive but you can get old ones relatively cheaply. Lots of luck, happy camping.

Koalaslippers · 06/03/2025 23:03

Zempire Evo T2 is great. It comes with a six person sleeping area which can be split in multiple ways. Additional bedroom insert can be added which sounds perfect for your family.

I’m hoping to get a second hand one yes.
Really don’t fancy being split up from DH. We go away to spend time together - would be very weird being split up. It’s the same with hotel rooms abroad. We wouldn’t want to be split across two rooms!

Well, no not in an ideal world, but you're looking for an ideal tent without the price tag of an ideal tent. Surely going away is spend time together when you're awake.

Sharptonguedwoman · 07/03/2025 10:02

Goddaughter has something like this for family of 5. Tent is huge. You could have a look.

FarmerDramaLlama · 07/03/2025 10:12

My friend had 2 tents for her big family. She used to have a single tent for her eldest. It was a pop up so they only put it up at night, doorways facing it, to create an extra room. She had a net thing she put over too.
Meant if anyone wanted to get out it was a squeeze. She couldn’t afford another tent so it was just a solution.

A bigger tent is much nicer if possible as well because that makes for more living space (important if you’re camping in the uk and it likely rains).
Nothing at all suggests the OP is unreasonable to expect to find something meeting her requirements in her price range, especially as she is happy to buy second hand. Tents are sold at massive discounts all the time and there are loads of bargains second hand if you know what you’re looking for (hence the reason for her asking on this thread). Really don’t understand why people are saying it’s not possible when there are several good options linked already, not all in the full price expensive bracket.

That’s what I was hoping. Sometimes you can find really good second hand options- esp if willing to travel to pick them up or no one else bids!
