Why is my house so dirty

Thespecialonepercent · 06/03/2025 17:19

I have two cleaners come every fortnight for four hours to do a big clean everwhere..all bathrooms, windows, all dusting, hoovering, mopping, cleaning the oven and fridge etc.
There’s only Dh, me, Dd (6) and d dog. I have to wash all the sofa covers every fortnight, the curtains fairly regularly. If I don’t wipe down/dust the dining table, tv unit etc daily, it gets a layer of dust within a couple of days, is this normal?!
I can’t remember it ever being like this before dd and even when she little, it was always clean & tidy

Is it just me?

I often think this too. If I don’t dust and polish every surface daily there is dust everywhere. I never notice it in other people homes, it makes me feel like my house is dirty and I don’t know how it gets that way.

Same! I kept the back door open all day today to try to get rid of the air dust[?] hopefully that won't make it worse!

The sofa is pissing me off, it’s stupidly a light colour (light beige) but surely it shouldn’t need it that often. Curtains similar colour, they’re nowhere near as often as that, but do seem to get dirty fairly often

You should scotchguard the sofa

No idea why your curtains would need that much washing

Justnotsureaboutit2021 · 06/03/2025 20:11

Do you live near a road and keep your windows open each day? Could be that, alternatively, i notice more dust in the winter, think we all dry out a bit with the central heating on so much more.

YoungSoak · 06/03/2025 20:19

My house is similar OP. I have two under 5 and no dog but I’m forever cleaning and mopping in between my weekly cleaner’s visits. I also have a robot hoover who gets full of dust and dirt daily. Kids are out of the house during the week. We do work from home half of the week but it still amazes me how much dust and dirt we seem to generate

We do have a log burner, it’s worse in winter, but still there in summer

Ah that'll be it. My grandson wrote on our TV screen the other day in the dust 😁

I am a professional housekeeper. Dop you llive on a main road or near a building site? Do you use a lot of sprays such as air freshers, Hair sprays or spray deodorants? They all cause white powdery debris. Is your hoover cleaned out regularly and filters washed or changed? Do your cleaners use microfiber cloths rather than yellow dusters which cause more dust than they solve? Also these modern disposable dusters are no good at all just move dust around.I agree 2 weeks is too long between cleans. However you may just have to lighten up and accept the dust! Spend time with DC andcDH instead of dusting. My mother was obsessive about housework and it made me very unhappy she preferred housework to spending time with me.

No, i’m very chilled about cleaning, I only really wash up, tidy and wipe down the dust daily, I hate cleaning, hence hiring cleaners

It's amazing how much it differs from place to place. We used to live in an old house in the middle of nowhere, and had to dust ALL the time. We now live in a modern house, with lots of houses around us, and in reality, I could literally go for weeks without needing to dust. Nothing except the location has changed.

justasking111 · 06/03/2025 22:47

Is the rope on your log burner damaged.

I think I'd bite the bullet and get some throws tbh..life's too short to be washing sofa cushions that often.

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 06/03/2025 22:51

Daily dusting??? That way lies madness.

motherofonegirl · 06/03/2025 22:55

Maybe aside from cleaning the oven and windows, your big clean really should be done every week, not every two weeks. I also do a hoover of downstairs every day or every other day.

SnoopysHoose · 06/03/2025 22:55

Put throws over your sofa, mine is always covered due to the dogs ,they come off for the humans to sit on.

MeganM3 · 06/03/2025 22:58

My old house was extremely dusty. I had to wipe everything down every few days and it was definitely noticeable. We lived in the city, close to a busy road.

Having moved out of the city I no longer get much dust. It's a relief. But of course there are new bug bears now!

eyeI · 06/03/2025 23:03

Has there been any building work near you house and when I say near I mean a fairly chunky distance not just next door - even a few streets away.

Demolition of buildings and construction creates masses of dust that travels much further than you'd think and gets in the air and settles on everything.

Franjipanl8r · 06/03/2025 23:21

Log burners are terrible for indoor air quality, if you’re using that and not getting enough fresh air into the house, it could well be that.

De-humidifiers strip moisture out of the air, you still need allow plenty of oxygen and fresh air into the house to replace the stale, dusty air.

mumda · 07/03/2025 00:06

Learn to ignore the grot.

Check the log burner though as people have suggested.

ArabellasHorse · 07/03/2025 08:38

I have this problem with my bedroom, it gets so dusty and I don't know why. Dust on the curtains, even', i'm always having to run the vacuum over them, all the surfaces get so dusty all the time. It's not as if I have woolly blankets giving off fluff and dust. Drives me mad. Strangely the rest of the house doesn't seem to get as bad. I always wet dust so not just moving the dust around. I usually leave a window open a bit in there all the time so maybe it's coming in from outside. One of life's mysteries 🤔

Lex345 · 07/03/2025 08:45

Do you have carpeted floors? If so, consider getting a carpet shampooer or hiring one, for a deep wet clean-made a big difference to us (we have a dog too!)

EmeraldShamrock000 · 07/03/2025 08:45

The dog will cause extra work. I do an hour a day between 6 and 7, (sad), and every day it is messy. (Dog here too).
Dust everywhere.
I would love a cleaner to do the annoying extras, the basics takes up enough time.
We need to start putting things back into the right place, the children are the worst.
No advice on solving the issue, following for advice.

ArabellasHorse · 07/03/2025 08:48

I couldn't be doing with washing sofa covers every two weeks though. I think a light colour probably isn't too practical with kids and a dog. The dirt is probably still there with my darker coloured ones but I can't see it 😁

janeandmarysmum · 07/03/2025 08:51

No-one ever died of dust.

This might be the problem in my bedroom actually, it is carpeted. Thanks for the tip! 👍

ArabellasHorse · 07/03/2025 08:57

What was that Quentin Crisp quote, ' There's no need to do any housework, after the first four years the dust doesn't get any worse' haha, or something like that 😂

SunhatSquarehat · 07/03/2025 09:05

What is it about the cushions and curtains that makes you clean them?
I'll hoover pet hair off the sofa but washing is a once every few years sort of thing - curtains pretty much never. They never get dirty - I don't understand what you're seeing? (I do plenty of open doors etc to keep things fresh)

Re dust - it's honestly just totally natural / part of life. Some of it comes from carpets, your own activities etc, a lot of it is just airborne so if you have windows open a lot will come in from outside. The solution is just not to worry about it - in historic houses they take care not to over-dust - it damages the surfaces more to dust than to allow it to rest there for a short while. Leaving it a long time it can need a more aggressive clean so balance is key, but basically there is zero need to dust at the sight of... dust. Let it go!

BeyondMyWits · 07/03/2025 09:07

We have 3 adults, a dog, and carpets, but very little dust. Some houses seem to collect it. Luckily ours doesn't.

But, we did make the choice to have leather sofas when we had kids and dog. We open windows and back door for at least half an hour a day. And I'd never have a fire/burner, having grown up with those dust generating machines. Would suggest a service and replacement door seals. Maybe an air purifier would help with getting those particles out of the air?

Unsure why curtains need washing quite so often? Maybe look into a pulley type track system? Helps reduce touch points.
