To say don’t put dog poo in bags

…if you’re not going to take the bag with you or stick it in the bin.

Went for a walk in local woodland for the first time since last summer and the path is strewn with poo filled bags. It’s really revolting. If you’re not going to take it home, it would be far better to flick it into the undergrowth and let it decompose. Leaving the bagged poo is surely the worst option?

I often see full poo bags hanging on trees. Can owners not just walk to the nearest bin and drop them in...?

What's wrong with this country? Filth and plastic left everywhere - no respect for others, no respect for nature. Just so sad.

I walked 5 miles on a well known trail today. Not a single bin anywhere.

I took my bags home though.

HRTQueen · 06/03/2025 19:44

If the lazy fuckers can’t be bothered to take their digs shit home or put in a bin the won’t bother flicking it under a bush

they simply don’t care and are lazy selfish disgusting slobs

I wouldn’t mind seeing the size of the bags you use to pick your horse’s crap up with.

i saw someone picking up after their St Bernard once, and I said "you don't need a poo bag, you need a carrier bag." They agreed.

Mines takes 2 months. I left one in my jacket. When I went back to it, it was dust

I thought at first you left a full one in your jacket! Hope I wrong about that.

Someone with a horse will be on soon to say that horses are vegetarian and therefore their poo is the equivalent of stepping in Chanel no 5. It very much isn't

And happily my dog makes a fair dent in our local horse poo problem.

straight into the nearest Vladimir (the poo-tin)

Round of applause for this

Horses are vegetarian and their poo breaks down a lot easier than dog poo. Nothing smells quite as bad as dog and cat poo. This is because of their diet. Fox poo can smell bad but there is not so much of it about.

My dog has no problem finding fox poo to roll in fairly often!

Crumpleton · 06/03/2025 22:30

While it's never nice to see a pile of any animal poo the difference between horse and dog is horses are herbivores making their poo pretty much harmful unlike dogs.

YeOldeGreyhound · 06/03/2025 22:33

Horse poo is pretty harmful when it is left in the road. Am speaking as a former biker.

WhateverWillBeWillBloodyWellBe · 06/03/2025 22:45

The worst is dog shit being put into bags and then hung up on trees or gates. I’d rather the shit was left alone than having to see that.

With so many dogs and everywhere being dog friendly it’s about time there were dog poo bins everywhere and emptied regularly

Hopefully these will be paid for by a dog tax because I don't want that cost added onto my council tax thanks. Bloody entitled dog owners. Just pick it up and put it in your own bin at home.

Dog poo can be put in general waste bins. It all gets processed the same.

CarpetSlipper · 06/03/2025 22:58

People should just train their dogs to shit in their own gardens and there wouldn’t be dog shit all over public footpaths. It’s revolting.

MrsAvocet · 06/03/2025 23:08

I run kids' cycling sessions on a council owned facility in a park. The cycle area is fenced and gated and there are "no dogs" signs all over the place. Yet every single week I have to pick up multiple piles of other people's dog shit before the kids can ride, probably about 50% of which has been bagged but then dumped. I think I'd rather deal with the unbagged to be honest as I just flick that into the grass, but I have to actually pick the bags up and walk across the park to the bin with it. It drives me mad. The whole of the rest of the park is dog friendly so why not stick to that, and why go to the trouble of bagging the poo and then dropping it in the middle of an area that is obviously used by kids? I like dogs but their humans not so much.

Can you train yourself to only shit at home? Never get caught short when out? Or somehow train your baby to only poo at home.
At least you can justify it to yourself. You can't explain it to a dog.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/03/2025 23:21

Mine go in the garden and when they go for a walk. Always pick it up when out and about and put in the dog poo bin.

Same, and that is fine.
Scrubbing the pavement with bleach, or only letting your dog poo at home - there is no need.

Local authorities and charities have to arrange dog poo collection by the tonne and it costs ten of thousands of pounds per site.Charities don’t like to advertise how much of their funding goes on disposing of this hazardous waste in case it impacts donations. I know land owners who are unable to grow crops on fields next to footpaths due to the high nitrate levels caused by high levels of dogs using the area. I have met people who think they are doing a favour by bagging and leaving it ‘for the wardens to pick up’. You can tell natural areas that have a problem; look near the public car parks and note the type of vegetation encouraged by dog waste- the oooosite of what our natural Heath and woodland need. There are 10-15 million dogs in the uk. We seriously need to think how we can cope properly.PS I am a dog lover!

Many councils are actually removing dog poo bins permanently. I guess because they don’t want to spend money on getting them emptied. People can’t use their wheelie bins for disposal - no dog excrement allowed, and there’s often no dog poo bins at parks/woods, so I’m not sure where you’re supposed to dispose of them.

There’s lots of things I don’t use which i have to subsidise with my council tax. But unfortunately it’s something we just have to suck up.

It's quite a lot of faff to bag a poo.

I feel confident that for every single bagged poo the owner genuinely thought 'i'll pick this up on the way back' or 'ill just put this down while I check my messages'. Which is why they are often hung on tree branches 'that will remind me'

So here's my solution.

If you have ever bagged a poo then you have certainly - at some point, perhaps often- accidentally left a bagged poo lying around. Therefore, if you own a dog, you should pick up and bin a bagged poo when you see one. It's the only way to restore the equilibrium.

😀

Our dog is 5 . I've picked up every poo except one which he did in a large clump of nettles in a wooded area.
I pick it up and always carry it with me until I find a bin. I've never 'forgotten' it!
Near my home, in an alleyway on route to a primary school, i often pick up poo that ignorant dog owner's have left (there's an actual dog bin in the alley!) Parents, teachers and kids don't need to deal with shit on shoes at 9 am!

A friend of mine trained all her dogs to shit on command, in her own garden. It is possible.

DickEmery · 07/03/2025 15:34

Of course it is. A lot of people can't be bothered though. And tbh why should they, when there are few expectations to do otherwise, and few repercussions for fouling public spaces.

Flicking it into the undergrowth still harms the plant and insect life in that undergrowth and, ultimately, the water table. Just pick it up.

yes I was once running with someone who flicked the poo into a crop food field which made me feel sick 🤢

My dog will be 15 in June. I am not going to be teaching her anything in her twilight years.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 07/03/2025 21:41

DON'T LEAVE IT BEHIND!
whether it's in a bag or not.

there are too many dogs, and too much dog shit, for the environment to cope with.
and loads of reasons why 'flicking' it into the undergrowth is not a good solution (some of them listed by others on this thread).

if you can't be arsed picking it up and taking it home, don't have a dog. or pay someone to exercise your dog and pick it up for you.
