Been in job for nearly a month, no contract

Working in a start up. Very small staff team, so there's no HR department as such, and I've never met the manager. Well I met him at my interview and I've had phone dealings with him, but he never comes to the company.

My salary was verbally agreed at interview but I've never had a contract or even a formal offer letter/statement of particulars.

My first payslip didn't show any pension deductions so I'm assuming they aren't paying into one.
I've chased them up for the contract about 4 times but still dont have it. I was told oh you'll get it tomorrow, but tomorrow never happened..

I know there's an implied contract of sorts because I've been paid and I'm working here, but I've never been in this situation before. I feel in a very precarious situation because I have nothing in writing, I have no idea about sick pay, maternity pay etc. Or even if I'm in a pension. .
All I know is that by law because I've been here under a month, I don't need to give any notice.
My family said to give them an ultimatum, I.e. i need something in writing by x date or I'm leaving.
I mean I could, but what if they then turn round and say, well get out then?
I don't trust the management, I barely know them and they've shown the way they treat their staff so why should i trust or respect them?

What salary did you verbally agree, how many weeks does that pay cover

That's the thing, I haven't a clue.
Because on this payslip there's no breakdown of how many hours, I've no idea. I started mid Feb and would've been paid before the cut off date, we agreed £28,000. I haven't a clue what that £589 is frankly.

In my previous role, my salary, days worked etc. And a full breakdown was listed on every single payslip.

Go on Brightpay documents portal and try and access your relevant documents, see if there is anything here.

Just tried to make an account but it says on Brightpay that my email hasn't been associated with anything.

Are you trying to set up an account

Yeah, in any case it doesn't seem the company have set one up for me as I've had no email.

I would say it's legit as Brightpay is a legit payroll software and it does a lot of stuff automatically - HMRC tax codes, NI coding etc. But it can only work with the information that is input for an employee.

Whether or not your company has set up everything correctly, I couldn't say.

Negroany · 06/03/2025 15:58

If leaving is an option, I'd just go, considering you already don't trust them.

I just find it odd how my salary and hours worked aren't listed on the payslip. I've been verbally told what my hourly wage is but I have no idea what this £589 represents, it's just a random figure.

I just don't respect employers who can't be arsed with the basics such as providing me with a written confirmation of the job I'm doing. Not only this, I've asked them 3 or 4 times and it's always 'yeah ill get it sorted/yeah you'll get it tomorrow.'
It's not as if I've never asked, they know full well I need it but they don't respect me enough.

Of course.
But we can't make them give it to you.

So, I'd leave.

I've just phoned Acas, they confirmed that legally I should've had a formal offer letter or something in writing on or before the first day of employment.
I have another job starting 22nd April however I'm worried about not being paid from this current place and losing out financially, especially with no contract I do not trust them to pay me in full.
