to think a school librarian should have heard of Wolf Hall and actually read books?

was chatting to a friend - who said the school librarian where he works doesn't read books, has never heard of Wolf Hall and cannot recommend any reading books to pupils as a result ... AIBU to think this is nonsense???

Here’s a JD of a school librarian. Very sad that they now seem to be a rarity.

Not unusual not to have read Wolf Hall, but you’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard of it!

My friend is a librarian (qualified and cilip certified) hasn't read a novel
For
Years - too busy with academia ( doing a doctorate) & doesn't enjoy fiction. Have you vertigo from your high horse OP?

Does she not go outside or something? You don't have to read and enjoy fiction to have heard of famous novels. Id expect people to at least if heard of things like Wolf Hall, Of Mice and Men, Catch 22, Thursday Murder Club etc

My 14 year old niece has heard of Wolf Hall! It's not badge of pride to be ignorant of the popular world around us.

@Prevalence I didn't say anywhere that she hadn't heard of it. Just wouldn't be able to recommend it personally

i wouldn't expect people to recommend it - literally just have heard of it, so i'm not sure why you made that comment then?

@Prevalence because it's a social media forum and people are chatting and I contributed. That's what people do,

I studied English literature at GCSE and A-level in the early 90s and we never read it. I may not have heard of it then either. There are loads of classics.

pollyhemlock · 11/03/2025 13:50

Wolf Hall was published in 2009 so nobody would have studied it for A level or indeed heard of it in the early 90s.

NewMarmiteJar · 11/03/2025 13:50

Well there you go then.

Well there you go then.

So if you don’t study a book at school you can’t be expected to have heard of it?

What a very blinkered way to go through life.

NewMarmiteJar · 11/03/2025 13:59

I was being flippant. Actually I'm going to get it out at the library when I take DS later. I'll report back!

NewMarmiteJar · 11/03/2025 14:00

And of course I'd heard of it! Dear me.

Well, reading this thread there’s no “of course” about! 🤣

Yes. Why?

Sorry I was responding to Dawn not having heard of Wolf Hall. Need to get the hang of these threads :)

As an older person I don't think that only reading stuff you studied at school is daft. There are decades of life and books after school.

snowflakelake · 12/03/2025 01:19

Okay, being old means my typing sucks 😂. You can't stop reading and learning after school.
