To leave a tip at the hairdresser's?

I regularly have my hair cut and blow-dried at the same salon and always leave a tip (a few pounds). The same when I take my children to the barbers. My partner never leaves a tip after a cut and says it unnecessary. I think it is and even worry that I don't leave enough. What do other people do?

I always tip unless the cut is bad. I also tip the person who washes my hair if it’s someone different.

verycloakanddaggers · 06/03/2025 05:56

It varies. You want to leave a tip, so leave a tip. It's ok to do things a different way to your husband.

Here is some market research from 2020: yougov.co.uk/consumer/articles/28201-how-often-and-where-do-brits-tip

Bert2025 · 06/03/2025 05:59

I tip as the service is really good. I have been going to the same hairdressers for about 18 years! I only tip two to three pounds each time. Tipping where I go has to be in cash otherwise it just goes to the owner so I tend to sometimes not have coins so I just give a £10 tip every three or four times I go. I go to hairdressers every six weeks. What I am not good at is remembering to tip the junior separately. She is lovely and does a great head massage so I am hoping they sort that out between themselves!

Doingmybest12 · 06/03/2025 06:03

I generally don't, I pay more for a more senior stylist and think what they charge is enough. If I went somewhere cheaper ,or they squeezed me in at the last minute at a busy time then I may do. But generally I feel I pay enough already.

SpanThatWorld · 06/03/2025 06:24

I pay people what they ask me for. I don't tip.

Fountofwisdom · 06/03/2025 06:37

My cut & colour costs between £95 - £120 each time and I normally give the stylist a £5 tip. I’m having a personal service for 2 hours and I feel like I should leave a personal tip, as I would in a restaurant. That’s less than a 5% tip though. In a restaurant, I always leave about 10% to 12% but that’s because it has to be split between more staff. I think a fiver for a hairdresser is fine.

Having said that, I rarely, if ever, see anyone else leave a tip at my hairdressers despite it being in an affluent area.

Guavafish1 · 06/03/2025 06:39

I tip… if good cut and service

autisticbookworm · 06/03/2025 06:40

Tipping historically was for those who earned a low wage to top it up. Now there is minimum wage hairdressers probably earn more than cleaners/carers/bar staff/dinner ladies and many more. I find it odd that we tip some services and not others.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/03/2025 06:49

I do. I have a cut and colour every 7 weeks and pay between £140 and £180, depending how many highlights/low lights go in. I have gone to the same hairdresser for 25 years. DH goes to her too nowadays.

I always give a £10 tip. She owns the salon.

If ever I need my hair done as an emergency, last minute invitation, etc, she always fits me in. Also when covid ended and everyone was waiting weeks for an appointment - we were texted in advance and had appointments that first morning.

Jazzjazzyjulez · 06/03/2025 06:49

£10 tip on £120 service, £20 at Christmas.

I always tip - I was brought up with my mum doing it and I do the same.

They don't sort it between themselves, unfortunately. I worked as a receptionist in hairdressers and in 10 years I only worked with one stylist who would share her tips with an assistant. Always tip directly to the junior, they work hard but get no tips because people assume stylists will share.

greengreyblue · 06/03/2025 06:52

I used to tip for the young trainees but these days it’s so expensive and the hairdresser washes and cuts my hair so I don’t. My repeat business every 8 weeks for years is my tip.

Interesting. We pay our cleaner an extra week at Christmas and on the rare occasion she is ill. We also paid a retainer during covid. DH gives his mother's carer a little extra from time to time, bar staff at a regular pub are often "bought a drink", we always thanked the dinner ladies and bought chocolates/biscuits at the end of the year - they tended to be the ones who dealt with grazes and tears at lunch play.

I'm a nail tech at a hairdressers. A tip is a lovely way to say thank you, I enjoyed my time here and think you've done a great job. Regular tippers are the ones that will be first in line for the last minute appointments or get the bigger smiles/ better service. If you can, you should always tip even a little bit if you plan on returning regularly :)

dippy567 · 06/03/2025 07:16

I don't tip...costs enough as it is! Pay by card and no option to add a tip so would feel very wierd slipping them a fiver...

toastofthetown · 06/03/2025 07:16

I mostly don’t tip because they don’t take tips on card and I don’t carry cash. I’m also not really a fan of tipping culture in general. I’d rather businesses charged for good and services what it cost to fairly pay their staff, rather than leaving me to guess what that was and make up the difference. I wish we had a tipping culture more like the Japanese one.

tyish · 06/03/2025 07:42

I don't tip. Only person I knew who tipped was my Granny so I assumed it was something older people did.

I pay by card and it costs over £100, if it's not enough, they need to up their prices.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/03/2025 07:48

We had this thread yesterday too, or the day before. Is it a campaign?

minnienono · 06/03/2025 07:50

I don't, my hairdresser is independent and works out of her home, £30 for 45 minutes of her time is a fair amount (I'm assuming £5 covers insurance, consumables etc)

Marylou2 · 06/03/2025 07:53

£10 tip for cut £20 for colour. @20%. North West. She does a great job.

wonderstuff · 06/03/2025 07:53

I don’t tip, I pay by card and there’s no option to tip electronically and I never have cash these days. I pay a fair amount for my cut, I’m hoping my hairdresser feels it’s fair. I find tipping at hairdressers so awkward and wish they would just charge me a fair price.

I tip the barber when I take my son, but he costs a fraction of my hairdresser!

minnienono · 06/03/2025 07:54

@autisticbookworm

True, and we certainly don't tip shop works, factory line workers etc all earnunv minimum wage, I earn £2 over minimum wage and at most I've had a bottle of plonk (regifted i suspect) or been brought a slice of cake

Oh , so you need to be bribed to do your job correctly.

this is absolute BS . You’ve asked for a price for a service and that’s the amount you should expect.

offering a better service because someone tips is terrible behaviour

FredaFox · 06/03/2025 08:04

The price my hair has now increased to I absolutely do not tip
It's no longer a benefit for the person who washes your hair, it's now washed by my hairdresser and they keep putting their prices up so no they aren't getting an extra tenner

YourChirpyFatball · 06/03/2025 08:05

I love my hairdresser. She's transformed me from frumpy to fabulous. So if my colour for eg is £82.00 then I give £90. Haircut £32 she gets £40.
