To not sleep with my boyfriend because he had norovirus?

My BF caught norovirus last week, d and v. His last synptoms were at the weekend - d on Saturday and v on Friday.

I am going away for three weeks tomorrow morning to Indonesia for work, and I am taking two planes and a boat. Tonight will be the last night we see each other before the three week gap We really want to sleep together but I just don’t want to catch it, especially as I am about to travel.

what do you think are the chances?

That would be a big no from me, it would be horrific to come down with noro whilst travelling. I know they say 48 hours as a rule of thumb, but I'm sure the virus can remain on surfaces for longer.

onestepfurtheragain · 05/03/2025 20:08

Even if symptom free you can shed it in stools for up to two weeks later - partly why it is so contagious... and why hand hygiene so important.

I really wouldn't!

ChompandaGrazia · 05/03/2025 20:11

Do you mean sleep as in sex or sleep as in share a bed?

Would he really want sex once he’s been ill?
As said up thread I’d swap not having sex for not shitting myself on a plane or anywhere else.

my sister in law was symptom free for 3-4 days, I gave her one hug for 5 seconds and me and DH were bed bound for days. Good luck lol

I wouldn't even be in the same room as him. You can still be contagious 2 weeks later with Noro.

Voted yanbu just from the title lol

FastFood · 05/03/2025 20:24

Stay away. He's not your boyfriend for now, he's an infected creature.
Having noro on a flight would be hell. No partner / child / dog / parent is worth taking that risk.

The 48 hours is a minimum not an absolute rule and I believe people can be contagious for longer. If you do see him I'd meet out somewhere , not go to his, as think contaminated surfaces etc can remain infectious for longer

Yes, I think 48h is just the most contagious period (and I guess in terms of staying off school it's the time when symptoms are most likely to reappear if you're not totally better).
You can shed the virus for 2 weeks, although only in poo and vomit, not by breathing or coughing. That's partly why it spreads so much in schools I guess - less than thorough hand washing of 5 year olds after they go to the loo!

I probably wouldn't be risking it given the holiday. If there was no holiday I think I'd be fine as the risk is small, it's just the consequence if you get sick on holiday is worse.

I wouldn't want to go long haul overseas without some goodbye affection and comfort from my partner, especially if i hadn't seen him for over a week before leaving. (Assuming you havent seen him since before he got ill, so several days before his last D or V symptom, would mean you last saw him over a week ago?)
I only see my partner on mondays overnight, and i hate the tuesday evening til next monday lunchtime gap to see him again. By the time i get there i cant wait to grab him for a cuddle, and of course i also crave the sex later in the evening after dinner and movies.
If you're going to see him in person regardless, i dont think it matters if you have sex or not as its the surfaces of the environment you're more likely to pick up the virus from. As long as he washes his hands after the toilet and theres no absent minded arse touching/scratching etc if he is still viral shedding in his stool, and you avoid any anal play (if thats your thing) then sex is probably no more risky than kissing and cuddling.

jolies1 · 05/03/2025 20:35

I have it now and would NOT risk it! Can’t imagine anything worse on a flight or while travelling. My son was sick on Fri, my husband yesterday, me today. It’s a horrible virus.

CalicoPusscat · 07/03/2025 04:07

@Letskeepthisbetweenus hope you got off OK.

When you speak to your boyfriend warn him to stick to bland foods only for the time being, I had a bad reaction to a Thai this evening (I had it about the same time as your boyfriend).

Happy hols!

Idk what you decided op. But I got it from a friend / her house 7 days after all symptoms in the family had stopped.
