Dodgy payslips in new job

Travellingcareer · 05/03/2025 08:16

I got my first payslip at the end of this month. It doesn't even show how many hours I worked, or any deductions whatsoever.
It's just a gross and net figure slapped on a piece of paper, no deductions shown for anything at all, NI, pension etc.

Nobody else seems to have questioned this either. I've asked for a detailed payslip and they've said they'll chase it up with the accountant, I'm also still waiting on my contract/formal offer letter after 12 days in the role.

Ive been told yesterday evening or today, so if it doesn't arrive by end of today that'll show how professional they are. Not sure what to do, shame as I do like the actual job.

I'd be looking for something else pretty quickly. If you ever have to go to HMRC or apply for a mortgage or something like that it'll be a nightmare

I've never known a place like it. As a teenager almost 20 years ago I had a couple of cash in hand jobs, but in my working life I've never had a payslip that doesn't show how deductions were calculated, I do have a mortgage at present but if I ever want to remortgage then that's very true, it'd be tricky.

This. How do you know if they are paying your national insurance? Deducting the correct tax? It sounds really dodgy.

Ive been put on a W1M1 1257L tax code, my HMRC account shows that my last employment has now ended and this new place is now my only employer.

The contract thing has annoyed me too. They don't have to write an entire contract, they literally just have to put my personal details on it and hit send. If they don't send it today that'll show how unprofessional they are.

Check your hmrc online account check how it's been recorded on there?

I am not quite sure how they managed that. I worked for a small employer and while there wasn't a formal (fancy thermal-printed payslip), they always printed one off directly from SAGE when they entered my PAYE and it automatically showed all the deductions. Is accountant doing by hand.. why?

Just had a look..I started late Feb so was only paid for the last week, but no tax and no NI have been deducted.

Funnily I just saw a letter in the office (it was left out on the desk) saying that companies house were going to deregister them soon if they didn't hear anything..

I've looked on companies house and they are currently registered, ill try and get a quick re read of the letter whilst nobody's there as I only scanned it.

If you are currently on a w1m1 tax code and have only been paid for a week during I assume monthly pay period then there is no tax or NI to deduct.

w1m1 codes look at the pay period in isolation and just give you 1/12th of your personal allowance without looking at your previous pay for the year.

Travellingcareer · 05/03/2025 09:54

True.. i will give them that.
However the payslip didn't even show number of hours and I don't know if I'm paying into a pension or anything. It's a farce.

https://www.hrsmartuk.com/what-information-should-be-on-a-payslip/

The employee payslip must have the data broken down on it by law.
This is as defined as follows:

  • earnings before and after any deductions;
  • variable deductions that are taken off the Gross Pay such as Income Tax or National Insurance Contributions;
  • the number of hours worked in a pay period, if the hours relate to an hourly rate of pay.

A payslip is an important piece of employment documentation that often gets overlooked by employers. We look at the key information that should be included.

Thank you for this. Could I report them to HMRC?

Be careful.

Someone I know was working at a company for a few years. The company then went into liquidation due to not paying bills.

Turns out that they also hadn't been paying my friend's income tax and national insurance etc and had been keeping his deductions themselves.

The P45 he'd provided when he started was found stuffed in the back of their desk drawer.

It was a nightmare for him to sort out missed NI contributions etc with the tax office.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/03/2025 10:37

I would;
Start looking for another job,
Ask for a proper payslip, (perhaps say your NI contributions don't seem to appear on the HMRC records, if they say they are still be processed say "OK, I'll check with them in case they have mucked it up.")
Don't make a big thing of it at this stage, go along with what they say...
Start looking for another job anyway...
