To tell husband to lose weight - snoring related

I'm at the end of my tether.

He doesn't sleep properly cause he snores all night long, sometimes sounds like he's going to choke as he wakes himself up with it.

Of Course he thinks he doesn't snore and I'm imagining it.

I'm at the end of my health tether. I have mouth ulcers bleeding gums and cold sores from lack of sleep. I'm on my knees.

He needs to lose weight as this is what is causing the snoring.

Sleep apnoea - he needs to see the GP urgently. Unless he wants to die much earlier from the consequences of depriving his body of oxygen every night.

Bobbie12345 · 04/03/2025 20:23

He should see his gp to get tested for obstructive sleep apnoea with this story.
if he does have sleep apnoea it can be very hard to lose weight until his sleep is treated.

I'm also due on today so feeling the rage more than ever! I just can't keep going to bed and not actually getting any rest.

Do you not have a spare bedroom @babasaclover ?

Berlinlover · 04/03/2025 20:24

Separate rooms if possible OP, it’s the only thing that works for us.

Gliblet · 04/03/2025 20:26

If he's in denial whatever you tell him won't go in - film/record him snoring, when you've got some decent 'evidence' of how obstructed his breathing is pack him off to the GP with it (or go with him) and let them tell him to lose weight. He'll be more likely to listen to them than to you. In the meantime is there a spare room you can use?

FabuIous · 04/03/2025 20:29

Mine didn’t believe me until I recorded him using the app ‘snorelab’. It only kicks in when there’s noise to record.

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 04/03/2025 20:32

I have one of these.
Separate rooms for us.

AndActuallyWhyYoureAtIt · 04/03/2025 20:42

My husband was like this, we ended up in separate rooms before he eventually went to the GP. He was referred to the hospital who sent him home with a gadget that clipped on his finger.. He stopped breathing 26 times per hour for up to 10 seconds at a time, this is actually really dangerous and can cause strokes/heart attacks.
He was given a sleep apnea machine to take home and it is amazing. Complete silence, he feels like he gets a better sleep also.

Darkclothes · 04/03/2025 20:44

OP- I endured this for years and years! I filmed him, used to shake him when he didn't breath and would lie there wondering if he'd ever take a breath and would he die in his sleep. It was awful for us both!

I would get him to the GP asap OP. Sleep apnoea can be deadly! If he won't go, see if his GP practice has an online consultation option. I did this for DH and completed all the details myself!

I assumed he'd have to go to a sleep clinic overnight, but they sent the equipment to him to monitor him overnight and posted it all back. He has a CPAP machine and lost 10kg within about 2mths from actually sleeping better and having more energy in the daytime. DH has since lost more weight and is hoping to get off the machine. I would urge you to get your DH help OP.

faeriesandelves · 04/03/2025 20:48

Another recommendation to download Snorelab app and I showed DH results. Results were "epic snoring". Seeing gp now to see if sinus / obstruction.

Hankunamatata · 04/03/2025 21:05

Record him. My husband did for me and was a kick in the ass to lose weight.

Some smart watches have a function that detects possible sleep apnea

healthybychristmas · 04/03/2025 22:03

Recommend the weight loss injections to him if he needs to losea lot of weight. I know a couple of guys who have lost over five stone each and have completely stopped snoring.

JHound · 04/03/2025 22:28

Sounds like sleep apnoea. A CPAP machine will help him. He should get a referral.

Pigeonqueen · 04/03/2025 22:30

Record him snoring. I had to do this with dh when he was so horrendous the whole house couldn’t sleep because of it. He kept saying he didn’t snore. He was absolutely horrified when he heard himself. It prompted him to go to the doctors about it.

babasaclover · 06/03/2025 17:32

Thanks everyone. I'm going to go down the recording route then try and make him see the gp.

Appreciate all the advice.

GP is worth it to check for everything people have already said. But we’ve been down that route and it didn’t help.

Husband snores badly. He’s done a sleep study etc. No sleep apnea.

He's lost a ton of weight and is in the normal range.

Still snores.

The specialist said it’s mostly down to his mouth and neck shape.

He sometimes wears a mouth guard thing that sort of helps, but it’s uncomfortable for him.

It’s a tough one. When I really need a good nights sleep he will sleep elsewhere. Losing weight helped a bit but really didn’t fix it.

I actually resent it less now because he has tried really hard to fix it.
