I don't want to be 'that' parent but...DS 14 has had a migraine since Sunday morning. Started with visual disturbances then headache across front of head. He slept on and off all day. Felt v sick.

Monday morning same, so took him to see advanced nurse practitioner, said to just continue with paracetamol and ibuprofen. She made me feel like an over anxious mother tbh.

Very quiet all day, not eating much and crying in the evening with the pain.

Today woke up feeling the same, very upset.

Temp slightly raised at 37.8 since yesterday.

He's had one migraine before last year, which lasted 36 hours.

Do I still carry on just waiting this out? He's not picked up his phone since Sunday morning, as an indicator.

Thanks all, the doctors are calling me back and if I can't get in with them today I'll ring 111.

He does seem a little better now than earlier.

It would help if PP RTFT to follow the line of conversation instead of jumping on one comment made as a part of many thereby unnecessarily clogging up the thread with their inane irrelevant thoughts

GP here, I would want to see him this afternoon.

As PP has said, state the symptoms (worst headache ever + mild fever + change in character), not the presumed diagnosis of migraine. These symptoms would go straight to the top of the triage list.

Anyone reading “migraine” on the triage list will presume this is an established diagnosis when it is not (yet) and so it will not be prioritised.

Please just do not be side-tracked by the assumption that this is definitely a migraine before ruling out other causes (however unlikely). You are correct to watch out for red flags but many of these are late signs - he still needs assessment even in the absence of these.

Best wishes to your son.

Only read op posts so not sure if mentioned yet but full sugar/caffeine Coke and ready salted crisps for the nausea these really help me.

Loverofoldfilms · 04/03/2025 17:08

Wishing @Rosietru 's son all the best. Don't mention migraine at all.

@KittenPause I assume you are having a bad day? But why take it out on folks who want to be supportive of a young boy who is clearly very unwell.

What are you expecting them to do for a migraine ?

Is he drinking enough water ?

Stress from school or work ?

Eating enough normal healthy food?

Are you expecting a dramatic brain scan incase he has a brain tumour ? Which he won't have because the signs aren't there. It's just a headache

Have you ever had a migraine? They aren’t “just a headache” 🤔

Rosietru · 04/03/2025 18:03

We have sumatriptan, he's just done a spray of it. Can do another in two hours if no better.

Said he will see him again in the morning if it's still there.

Thanks for all the advice and reassurance that it was ok to go back.

I get migraines and triptans work for me. I can't take ibuprofen and already max out paracetamol for chronic pain. I don't know what the advice is for U16s with them though. I also find the Kool n soothe patches helpful.

I really would get him seen though. Last summer I had an awful migraine that lasted days, had a phone GP appt who changed me to a different type of triptan. Still had the migraine. Eventually (maybe day 7 of the migraine) they got me in the surgery and didn't like the sound of it and also my slightly red eye. Sent me to A&E who then sent me to the eye hospital and it turned out to be Scleritis. Took weeks of meds and eye hospital visits to fix it, I lived in my blacked out bedroom for almost a month.

I say all this not because I think your son has something more than a migraine, just that migraines that won't go away CAN be something else, and if it is going on for days I'd get him seen by a Dr to check it is "just" a migraine.

OneGrumpyLurker · 04/03/2025 18:26

Ha! Started typing before your reply came through.

Glad he's been seen and get well soon wishes for him.

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 04/03/2025 18:30

That's great news OP! Sumatriptan always works for me, so hopefully he'll be feeling better soon, if a little battered, as I usually feel like I've gone 10 rounds in the boxing ring by the time my migraines clear.

Poppyfield15 · 04/03/2025 19:05

We don't know if it's a migraine. Meningitis will be need to be excluded by examination.

TigerRag · 04/03/2025 19:28

The spray worked for me (and better than tablets) but it gave me sinus infections

Zanatdy · 04/03/2025 19:37

I find migraine tablets do better than paracetamol / ibuprofen, for any future take as soon as feel it coming on. I suffered terribly as a child, haven’t had one for years but have some visual disturbances two weeks on the row followed by headache so need to get checked out. I can’t see all the words on the page (or what’s in the room, so not just the screen) for half hour or so, then it goes again. Then a headache (but not migraine) follows. I’ve had a lot of bad health issues over the years, including acute pancreatitis 5 times but I absolutely cannot stand having a migraine as its so deliberating.

hope it eases up soon for him, poor thing, it’s a long time to suffer one.

spiderlight · 04/03/2025 20:33

I hope the sumatriptan sorts him out. I wouldn't wish migraine in my worst enemy.

spiderlight · 05/03/2025 17:28

How is he today?

Rosietru · 06/03/2025 18:24

It took until this morning for it to completely go. We have another prescription too so can use it at the first sign next time!

I'm SO pleased it worked for him OP, as migraines really are miserable. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's a one off!

Rosietru · 09/03/2025 11:58

He's got another one coming on now, he's just done the spray, praying it stops it. I can't believe it's happening again 😢

I had really bad migraines throughout childhood and still get them now on occasion. I think I was referred to a neurologist and I was given various medications to trial. Sympathies to you and your DS, they're really awful things.

RandomMess · 09/03/2025 13:02

Please keep a food, activity and sleep diary. Identifying a cause can make all the difference.

Hormone changes are often a cause. For me it was when they started but it was when I was tired AND had eaten cheese.

Maldives2006 · 09/03/2025 13:46

@Rosietru

if you're concerned always go and get checked hospital staff would always prefer that you do but it is probably a migraine.

Firstly migraines are the pulsating of tiny blood vessels in the head that's what causes the pain Paracetamol and Ibuprofen probably isn't strong enough. Try Volterol and Solphodine and he has to learn to take the painkillers as soon as he gets the hint of a migraine NO WAITING!!! And then go lie down in a darkened room.

Secondly get him to start keeping a record of symptoms and migraines to see if a pattern. My husband can't have red wine and is careful with cheese and chocolate.

Thirdly when he's better get his eyes checked to make sure there's no problem with vision

Fourthly get fresh air and no gaming or screens before bed

TigerRag · 09/03/2025 14:02

Migraine buddy app is good for keeping track

I discovered one of my triggers was cheese. Couldn't have cheese spread or lactose free cheese spread.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 10/03/2025 07:49

If he is getting them often, go back to the GP. I can't remember what it's called but they gave my son some tablets that he takes each evening as a preventative.
