To just take the disciplinary? (Completion)

Just been informed yesterday by my solicitor after months of worrying and back and forth that my house sale is going to complete next Tuesday. Obviously very excited and a lot to do.

I have tried to book Tuesday off but my manager has declined it and said no as I’m suppose to be out that day at a charity event and nobody can cover. I looked at the timings and I won’t be back until 6pm after the estate agent is closed to collect the keys. Live 200 miles from family so nobody can help that side either. I also don’t know what I’ll do with all my stuff etc and really wanted to do final checks. I’ll do as much as I can over the weekend.

so I’ve had to message again to say I really need that day off. I can’t risk having nowhere to sleep that night and I will need to have removals that day. Manager has said if I take the day it’ll be unpaid and I will be at risk of disciplinary. I’m going to have no choice am I?

Wow nice company you work for. What bastards

Jackiebrambles · 04/03/2025 09:18

Your manager is an arsehole. Can you go over their head?

Fitzcarraldo353 · 04/03/2025 09:22

Surely you can negotiate completion day? Or have you exchanged already with that date as the completion date? In which case it's pretty foolish with an immovable work event that day. I'm usually the biggest proponent of flex working but sometimes work can't be scheduled around you and it's up to you to plan for it.

It sounds like you'll just take the disciplinary but sounds like your work will take it pretty seriously.

helpfulperson · 04/03/2025 09:23

Can anyone else take your place at the event or will it have to be cancelled?

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 04/03/2025 09:25

Wow your boss is cold hearted!

I'd speak to the estate agent as they might well be able to come up with a solution for you.

Are you selling a property on the same day as well?

2chocolateoranges · 04/03/2025 09:25

you tell your solicitor etc that Tuesday doesn’t suit and it needs to be Wednesday or Monday due to work.

Thingsthatgo · 04/03/2025 09:25

You should have had a day in when completion day was scheduled for. You could have told them specifically which days you could not do.

Pr1mr0se · 04/03/2025 09:26

Change the completion date to a day you can get off work

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 04/03/2025 09:26

Sorry, just read properly!

Some removal firms will hold your stuff for a day or two, obviously they charge but that might be a solution.

But honestly, your boss is being really unfair.

LucastaNoir · 04/03/2025 09:32

Take Wednesday off, ask the removals if they can hold your stuff overnight, check into a hotel for Tuesday night.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 04/03/2025 09:34

I know it really sucks but if your boss needs representatives at this charity thing he needs them . and your house problem is not there problem try to ask for Monday or Wednesday. Or you must have your house empty before Tuesday. And put in storage .People calling boss names is not fair while he could be a bit more flexible if he can't he can't I hope you get fixed

sSssssssssssssOOO · 04/03/2025 09:35

If you really can't move the date can you go over your managers head.

Pancakeday14 · 04/03/2025 09:35

I’ve had to accept it as the whole chain is pushing for that date and my sellers mortgage offer runs out on the 12th and she’s left it to late for an extension 😬

Notverygoodatusernames · 04/03/2025 09:35

Pay for movers to pack and store your stuff. It will be worth the money.

xILikeJamx · 04/03/2025 09:38

We've had similar before and just paid the removal company to keep all our stuff in the truck overnight and deliver the next day instead. They'll probably have similar happen all the time - hopefully they'll be able to accommodate you as it's mid-week and not like a busier Friday etc

YouveGotAFastCar · 04/03/2025 09:39

Don’t accept the Tuesday. It doesn’t work for you. Push for Wednesday, or another day.

It’s that or ask the estate agent to have someone give you the keys after hours - I’ve had to do that before. It will be stressful, but you won’t leave yourself any other options if you won’t change the day. It has to work for everyone and this doesn’t work for you, and putting your job in jeopardy doesn’t sound at all wise!

Frostynoman · 04/03/2025 09:39

Pull them forward to the Monday / it shouldn’t make much difference to the chain but it has big implications on your work

RatedDoingMagic · 04/03/2025 09:42

Move out of the old place on the Monday.
Have the delivery company store your stuff for 2 nights and spend 2 nights in Premier Inn.
Move into the new place on the Wednesday.

Or tell your solicitor that you aren't available that day.

It's totally unprofessional to take unauthorised leave if your employers can't manage a specific event without you.

PoppyFleur · 04/03/2025 09:42

You do not have to accept the completion date. Change it to a date that is acceptable for work. Do not risk your job and financial security because others in the chain are demanding a specific date. Push back!

TipsyBlueOtter · 04/03/2025 09:53

Your manager is a complete arse!

But I've had a few completion dates where I wasn't physically present - you will need to clear out the day before and give the keys to the agent, get them to handle it. Removals companies will store your stuff overnight. Or just push back and say the date doesn't work for you.

ClairDeLaLune · 04/03/2025 09:53

You can’t take Tuesday off at such short notice! It would be letting a lot of people down. I would sack you if I was your manager.

Either request a different completion date, or get the removal firm to hold your stuff for a couple of days.

daisypetula · 04/03/2025 09:53

Your job is what is helping to pay for the new house. Change the date or stay in a hotel.

The manager is NOT an arse. What options do they have? The only one would be to cancel the charity event, letting a lot of people down. That’s hardly fair. It’s really short notice. It’s a problem for OP to solve, not the manager.

TipsyBlueOtter · 04/03/2025 09:59

OK I missed that it was a special charity event. 😳 Yeah they're not unreasonable to decline then are they, sorry. (But escalating it to a disciplinary is harsh!)

I think there are lots of ways to solve this OP. I'd start by explaining the situation to your solicitor and estate agent.

ringmybe11 · 04/03/2025 10:01

I think this is a bit different to a standard day at work unless you do events on a weekly basis? I'd have given that date to the solicitor beforehand as a non negotiable for completion but it's too late to do that now if there's multiple people to plan around. I would move out on Monday, have removals hold your things for 2 nights and move in on Wednesday as another poster suggested.
