To get out of uber that was driving the wrong way?

Was recently on holiday in a fairly dangerous city with a horribly high crime rate. It’s ok if you stick to the nice areas.

I needed to go 10 minutes from A to B so got an uber. The driver started driving the wrong way towards another nice area. But the issue is that after the nice area I would only vaguely know which way it was back to B.

The route he was taking would take 35 minutes. I told him to turn around and go back the short route that drove through nice areas only. He refused and said he needed gas.

So I waited until traffic lights in a nice area and told him I was getting out. He then was protesting that I shouldnt worry and I should stay. So I got out.

Was this the right thing to do?

Of course YANBU.

Did you also report him to Uber? Getting gas isn't on your your time, Obviously something he shouldn't be doing (if that's what it was)

Yes, you were right.

You were right. Well done OP!

It's easy to freeze and second guess yourself or worry about 'being difficult' when you get the feeling you should act to protect yourself - but please don't.

Worst case scenario you've cost yourself half an hour or so getting an alternative cab, best case scenario you've saved yourself from being raped and/or murdered.

Report this to Uber, they will block him from your account, with no drama and also they will be aware of what happened. Uber called me once, the minute I got out of an Uber going the wrong way

Definitely the right thing to do. None of us knows what his intentions were but the risk is too great and he wan't acting in a normal way for a taxi driver. The whole concept of getting into cars with strange men, and that that is percieved safer for women than walking or using public transport, is wild when you think about it. I hate that we always have to worry like this.

Thank you - feel better now

Always trust your instincts.

I got an Uber once that dropped a friend off and then me; he was using Google maps and at a T junction it clearly said and showed to turn right, but he started to turn left. I said you need to turn right (going left was absolutely nowhere near my home), and he argued with me that going left was fine. I started to raise my voice in panic, told him he was going nowhere near my destination and he finally said ok and turned right. I made him stop about 100m from my house. It put me off getting a cab alone, and I wish I’d told my friend to report to Uber that the driver was attempting to override both mine and the Sat Nav’s directions for no good reason.

I'm guessing South Africa or Brazil. You definitley did the right thing, it is never the wrong thing to err on the side of caution, and trust your instincts, when it comes to your personal safety.
