Private Scans/Tests or NHS? - Blood in Urine

Ohlife2020 · 03/03/2025 16:54

DH had seen his urine really brown the weekend before last. He called 111 (they only called back after 24 hrs while promising 4hrs) and went through walk-in centre and then a GP appointment. Only on last Friday, it's confirmed there's blood in urine but no infection. Today there are more results coming out confirming high red cells and abnormal levels of epithelial cells.

I'm now worried to sick. All the slow moving and disjointed NHS services don't give me confidence in getting a clear picture for another week or so.

Time can be critical if you know what. He doesn't have private healthcare plan. So we will have to pay out of own pocket if not through NHS.

I've looked online, Scans in private sector probably will cost £200-£400 for bladder, prostate and kidney? But I don't know if just scans are sufficient to diagnose or eliminate.

Any suggestions please?

Book an initial appt with a private specialist in that area (normally around £200 ish) and ask for their advice on what tests or recommendations.
I did that last year not for bladder issues, but a what should I do/test and he was helpful about what he recommended as both a private advice and what to chase up with in the nhs if I wanted to go that route too.

He should get an urgent referral via the NHS for blood in urine and seen for a cystoscope (camera up the Willy into the bladder for a look) within a few weeks. Ask via GP for urgent urology referral and how long it would be.

Thank you. This is very helpful.

He has another GP appointment tomorrow to follow up on the test results. Just so frustrating. - He doesn't feel any pain , so that's more reason to worry..

NHS should really try to take an overview of the expenses over time. The quicker they take actions, the less costly to them in the long term!

I can totally understand your worry but there are lots of causes of this. Bright red blood in the urine of men is the big worry and it doesn't sound like he has this. I've seen brown urine and microscopic blood as a side effect of some medications. Think statins can cause this sometimes. Best of luck

Thank you. But he's not on any med.

No pain. But he's feeling a bit unwell - weak and tired since then.

What to do now?

He's seen the consultant today with ultrasound and cystoscope. They couldn't find the cause. There's only a small stone in the kidney which is unlikely to be the cause. PSA screening came back normal too.

He says there's still blood in urine. He's also not been himself for the entire month!

They are going to arrange CT, but in a few weeks time!

I wanted to cry the entire afternoon. What could it be? I'm so worried and hate this feeling of unknown. Can't find anyone in RL to unload. Don't even know if I shall ask him how he
feels..
