To consider getting guinea pigs when I have the nose of a bloodhound

To consider getting my DD (10) guinea pigs?
The main thing that puts me off is they'd likely have to stay in her room and I'm worried about smell. I'm menopausal and have as a result annoyingly developed a Marvel superhero level sense of smell. There is plenty of room and she's very responsible and I know would look after them but imagine they are pretty stinky. We have a dog who I love but if I had had this sense when we were getting him we would never have ended up getting him as he absolutely stinks to me though others can't smell it (both in our family and others who don't live with us reassure me he doesn't smell horrendous so I am pretty certain it is my overactive sense of smell!)

Also what do people do with pets like this when they go on holiday? We have a dog who happily goes to a lovely small family run kennels if we go away and he can't come, but they don't take guinea pigs!

She started with a request for a hamster but after doing a bit of research has discovered a lot of them don't really like attention/handling and are prone to biting. Though I think she also just thought we would be more likely to say yes as it is a smaller cage.

They do smell and take a lot of care. They're actually quite fragile health wise too so not the best idea if they've got to stay in her room.

Hamsters can be nippy and again fragile health wise.

Rats are fantastic wee creatures. They love being handled and are very sociable. Rats would always be my choice for a child's first pet, they're so loving and great company.

I adore rats and they do largely make great pets however they do smell, and they can also take a while to become tame. Not ideal for children, teens maybe. Parents wouldneeed a lot of input in training and taming them. Males need neutering and when they bite they hurt like hell same as hamsters. I still have a huge scar from an attack from an intact male 🤣 happened over a decade ago.

I have a 5ft run outside and two baby sows. It's the mess I find more annoying than the smell..I spot clean every day then deep clean every Sunday. I don't think I could keep them indoors in DDs room though.

Guinea pigs don't make good indoor pets. Very messy and smelly. Rats can be smelly and they need quite a lot of input also can't be kept on their own so you could find yourself in a never ending cycle of groups of rats as they die and have to be replaced.

I suggest a syrian hamster or a pair of gerbils. Gerbils don't really like to be handled and they're fast but they don't smell and they're so entertaining to watch. As long as their cage is big and deep enough to build tunnels (with plenty of enrichment) they will keep themselves entertained if she loses interest. Although they do live to to 4 years and hamsters only 2. We have gerbils and i have a ridiculously sensitive sense of smell and i can smell the bedding but not them.

A suitable cage for a hamster or 2 gerbils would be the bucatstate 2.0 on Amazon. Don't buy a cage from pets at home, no cages that they sell for rodents actually met the minimum recommended standard for welfare.

I wouldn’t , we looked after some for a fortnight and the room constantly smelled slightly or urine soaked sawdust (despite cleaning the cage out daily). And there was sawdust bloody everywhere.

Isn't there one that they do that is suitable now?
