Cost of fence installation

I am wondering if anyone has an idea of the costs to supply and fit new fence panels (just standard garden feather edge fence, nothing special of fancy). My old fence got completely destroyed by the strong winds and I've been trying to get some quotes to replace it. So far I have two quotes: one said £200 per panel of fence (6ft wide standard panel) and the other £234 per panel + VAT.

I don't know if I've been living under a rock or on another planet but to be honest I am a bit shocked. Does replacing a fence really cost that much? 😳

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences!

Mine was £150 per panel last summer with concrete posts and gravel boards when I replaced 8 panels.
I also have wooden posts and fencing where I just replace as needed - I can buy a panel for £45 and a post for £11 - postcrete js £7. You could do with an odd job / handy person to do it rather than a firm - they tend to charge £24 per hour or a day rate.

Fence replacement is incredibly expensive. I've never quite understood why the cost is so high. It costs less to have a decorator come and do a super dooper paint job on your living room

Might depend where in the country you are, but I would say round about the £200 mark per bay (ie base board, panel, post). Just had one of my fences done.

I've just paid about £1500 for 8 fence panels plus concrete posts.

I also paid about the same 2 years ago for another similar size fence.

Fence panels are really expensive.

A Fence is something you may be able to tackle with a few mates - we managed

I think we used the metal post holders - depend on your ground if they go on easy enough or yin need concrete

Also don't go for full feather board if you can - gaps between the slats is much more resilient to wind

If they’re not doing the posts then that is somewhat excessive imo. A feathered edge panel will normally be around £40-60 per item although you can pay more. Takes a few moments to screw onto the posts or slide down into place if you have concrete slot posts.

If you’re having new posts then it’s closer to what I’d expect. Fitting the posts is the hardest and most time consuming bit.

Buy the panels yourself from an independent and get a labourer to fit them for a day rate. £250 a day cash is still possible (some will be more like £350). When you're buying the panels, ask the guys on the sales counter if any of their colleagues would do it, many will moonlight at weekends.

If you are Midlands based, I'd recommend www.grangewoodfencing.com

£3.5k here for removal of old fence, supply and fit of 6 UPVC 6ft wide panels, gate, concrete base panels, concrete posts and the postcrete.

Most of the cost was the materials.

Took about 2 days and it's a small garden with good access!

Thank you, all. I clearly have been living on a different planet! 😊

In the area I live, generally there would be the material cost and then the labour charge £25-30 per hour. Recently my brother and I mended my parents fence (who are capable of fencing but getting old) we put one post in and fixed two panels up (my dad had mended them) it took us less than 2 hours. We’ve put longer fences up in the past and it’s only taken us a couple of days. It’s one of the easiest tasks to do.

In lockdown, my teenagers replaced our 80ft length of fencing. Our neighbour ordered the panels, posts, concrete etc and lent them all the kit to carry out the work. They completed it very competently under his instruction. Looks like I saved myself a fortune.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/03/2025 14:22

I'm going to do ours myself. Half of ours went in one of the storms, so redoing it with gaps in.

The bloke that did it originally, did a crap job and I know I can do better myself.

Just need to buy the materials and spend a day or 3 building it. As long as the posts go in fine, I'll be sorted.

Is it just the panels that need replacing?
Or do you need new posts as well?

If you already have concrete posts in place, that aren't affected by storm damage, you could replace the panels fairly cheaply yourself (you can buy brand new standard-sized panels for £20-40 each) or even pay someone to help with this.

If you need new posts/concrete, you could also do this yourself - it honestly isn't very hard - and still save money.
