To think it’s inappropriate for a colleague to vape during an MS Teams meeting?

I was in a meeting today and one of my colleagues was vaping the whole time. I get that people may vape, but isn’t it a bit disrespectful to do it on a professional call? Would you say something or is it just me being sensitive?

This made me laugh because yes, it's shocking!

I think you should only do what you'd do in a face to face meeting on teams. So when I worked I would take a cup of tea/glass of water in with me to internal meetings but I wouldn't eat (unless it was a specific 'lunch meeting'). I preface this with I don't smoke /vape and never have, I wouldn't expect anybody to vape in a face to face meeting so I wouldn't expect them to do it on teams.

I completely agree with this. Teams meetings should be treated the same as any other meeting.

BlondiePortz · 03/03/2025 22:47

If i was a manager and it was infront of clients yes I would say something

Staff only? No none of my business

Lyleandbiscuit · 03/03/2025 23:16

Can’t say I’d be able to care one bit about this, sorry.

HollyBerri · 03/03/2025 23:28

I vaped during some online training today. I thought my camera was off though. I wouldn't have otherwise and turned it off as soon as I realised (only a minute or 2).

CharlotteLightandDark · 03/03/2025 13:29

These are my feelings.

It was an internal call, our team meeting. We’re both senior, and this is the first time she’s ever done it… which just so happens to coincide with our manager being off sick today, so she wasn’t in the meeting.

Edited

Was it just a team meeting with the managers or direct reports as well. I'd be fine with the first - it's nice to have a level of informality between colleagues. I think with a broader team meeting though its inappropriate, but still wouldn't report. Either it's a once off or they'll continue and the manager can deal with it if they wish.

Highly unprofessional.

Its none of your business. Its on their manager to pull them up on it if they see fit.

I'm a vaper and I know MNers hate it, but realistically it had no impact on you whatsoever. No smell, no third hand chemical inhalation. Don't tell tales.

Agreed.
Personally I don’t vape or smoke, but we have clients who do sometimes. Genuinely makes no difference to me.

Appalonia · 04/03/2025 00:08

Since it's not affecting you in any way, I see no reason you could have to object to it. It's not like you're in the same room as them, is it?

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/03/2025 00:11

Yes it's unprofessional and demonstrates bad judgement.

JMSA · 04/03/2025 00:12

Totally unprofessional.

Ebeneser · 04/03/2025 00:27

When vaping first became a thing a bloke in our work used to vape in the office until he was told not to. He used to bring his own coffee and aeropress in as well, sit there making that with his vape 😂

hotfirelog · 05/03/2025 00:17

Internal I don't get wound up about. External would be a no

Glitterybee · 05/03/2025 00:22

I HATE vaping! I honestly cannot stand it. I have asthma and if I’m with someone who vapes it makes me feel like I can’t breathe!

However…

I find it funny when I see colleagues doing it on team calls. It definitely pisses some people off and I know there’s been peoples challenged over doing it but at the end of the day if they’re in their own homes and it’s an internal call where’s the harm really?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/03/2025 00:31

I’m a lecturer and was gobsmacked to see a student smoke actual cigarettes during a one to one Teams meeting. He was in his own home, so not my business. I think it was the idea of a person smoking indoors that surprised me, not that it was in the meeting. (Of course I didn’t say anything though!)

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 05/03/2025 00:56

Are you worried the vapour will travel through the internet and vaporise through your speakers?

Mumandgrandma85 · 05/03/2025 01:20

TheNoonBell · 03/03/2025 15:19

I don't mind what people do on calls generally but in one instance a guy from a supplier decided to have a wank with the mic unmuted. Worse was he was getting off on the rather attractive presenter 😂

He never got invited to those calls again.

This made me absolute laugh 😃 omg as if he did that pml xx

HelpMeGetThrough · 05/03/2025 06:07

I find it funny, I’d love for someone to spark up an actual fag during a teams meeting at my work.

I spark up a roll up on our morning meetings with a cup of tea. If it goes on longer than normal, it's definitely a two fagger.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 05/03/2025 06:14

Highly unprofessional

but not surprised 3 in 10 think it’s fine.
We are degenerating as a society.

no doubt they are the same ones who think it’s fine to

  • vape on tube / train platforms
  • listen to music / watch videos on your phone using the speaker in the street / supermarket/public transport
  • have a phone call on loud speaker in public
  • eat mc Donald’s on the tube 🤮
HelenWheels · 05/03/2025 06:25

i turned off my camera when i vaped during a team meeting

MasterBeth · 05/03/2025 10:49

I'm old enough to remember people smoking at work. That was outlawed because passive smoking is damaging to the health of colleagues (and the office environment - smoke damage/dirt etc).

I can't see why a work colleague at home can't vape.

MasterBeth · 05/03/2025 10:50

It's not damaging to teeth over Teams!

All of these things are anti-social because they affect passers by with unwanted smells, noises or vapour.

Vaping over Teams does none of these things.
