What to ask at parents evening? Report took is by surprise

DD is in reception. She has some problems with her vision and gross motor skills. She can read and has good fine motor.
She has a plan and we had our first meeting with the SENCO and her teacher before half term. They seemed positive. Have had a teaching occupational therapist in to look at the playground and exercises that the class can do together that will also support her balance development. All great. I asked how her reading etc was going and no concerns raised (OT suggested some adjustments to help her, e.g. where she sits or a stand or her book) but they didn't say anything about education/learning concerns.
When we got her mid year report (which really just has a few words against each topic) she was Below expected or working towards on everything.

We have parents evening soon and you only get 10mins. I want to understand why she is below in everything.
We read at home with her and while she doesn't enjoy school books, she will read. She does love books. She can count to 30 and understands how to count to 100. She can do simple maths (adding 1 or 2 to numbers). She is a sociable and engaged girl- though doesn't seem to bave any particular friends in her class. She gets on better with older children.

How can she be below expected? I sounds like such a "one of those mums" but it feels wrong.

These are end of year targets so I would imagine many children are not yet meeting expectations. I would start by asking if she is on track to meet expectations by the end of the summer term.

I’m sure the teacher will share the hows and whys at the PT. If you don’t have enough time then you can always arrange another meeting.

That's really helpful. They should put that on the report!

At this stage in the year, I think below or working towards expectations is pretty standard and not a reflection on your child particularly.

The targets are for end of the school year.

Is your dd quite extroverted ? If she’s quiet and doesn’t demonstrate her abilities then the teacher will assume she doesn’t know that skill because a lot of Reception isn’t based on work on paper.

She is at home- but I don't know if she is at school. She usually comes home saying she hasn't played with anyone (which I try not to show breaks my heart) but she says she plays with older kids at after school club)

How did your DD do in summer reports OP? Sounds like she’s having a tough start to school, socially and academically

I always ask what I can do at home to support learning at school. And if there is anything they would like to ask me that would assist with my child’s learning.

In your shoes a PPs suggestion of if she is on track to meet expectations by the end of year is a great question. Then if the answer is no you can drill down into what would need to happen for that to change

My daughter did this all the way through infants, it wasn't true, I found by asking did you play with x today, you get a different answer.
