To think calling in sick on a Friday looks bad?

I know people can get sick any day, but I can’t help feeling like calling in sick on a Friday (or a Monday) raises eyebrows. It just looks suspicious, even if it’s genuine.

Do managers actually notice or care? Or am I overthinking it?

We work over 7 days . I would think one off no regular yes it would.

I only take note of when an employee is off sick if it’s very often or if there’s a pattern. E.g lots of Fridays (it’s actually more often lots of Mondays!) So someone calling in sick on a Friday I wouldn’t even think about what day of the week it was.

I also somewhat accept that there will always be some who just want a day off, and that’s okay, as long as it’s not very often. As in, I don’t care if they call in sick every now and then when they’re actually well and just need a day off.

For reference I own a small business, so I can’t speak for big companies!

Not really. If it’s a Friday, maybe the person has been trying to keep going and pushing through to the weekend and not managed to.
Or a Monday maybe they were hoping to kick it off over the weekend and that’s failed. If there was a pattern, fair enough… but I wouldn’t overthink.

It depends if it's a regular event or not.

Wherearemymarbles · 02/03/2025 21:39

I think there are scores hr can use,
ie a Tuesday is 1 point, monday or friday 4 points and they track the points
a one off Friday/Monday no issue its only if it becomes regular

I had to phone in sick after Christmas/NY holidays of two weeks. Luckily I sounded SO unwell which I was but it really wasn't a good look. But not had time off before in this role so they know it's not a thing!

Pancakeflipper · 02/03/2025 21:43

Depends on the regularity.

Chunkilumptious · 02/03/2025 21:49

Also, some conditions there is a genuine pattern. I have epilepsy and genuinely can be worse at the end of the working week when fatigued or Monday mornings early when changing routine/ stressed about the commute and my meds haven't kicked in. I think flexible WFH is a brilliant thing for workers, those with health issues and quality of living. I don't think it's something to give up lightly.

DingDongDenny · 02/03/2025 21:53

Surely a rough measure should just be 1 in 5 days off will be on a Friday, if working Monday to Friday

DefyingGravidy · 02/03/2025 22:02

Mondays I notice and would start to keep track of if it was more than a couple of times. I’ve never noticed people having regular Fridays off sick so it probably wouldn’t cross my mind.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/03/2025 22:15

I only work Monday and Friday so that's me screwed!
