Should I correct my yoga teacher?

I like her very much and her classes are great. Every week she says we’re going to do a ‘solpine twist’.

All the other yoga teachers call it a supine twist, which makes sense, as we’re lying down. I have googled ‘solpine’ and can’t find any references to it. So I’m pretty sure she’s just getting it wrong.

Is it kind to quietly point this out and save her looking very slightly daft each week? Or is it rude and embarrassing and I should keep quiet?

YABU - say nothing
YANBU - let her know

No, why would you? I had a yoga teacher who used to use ‘buttocks’ as a singular noun as in ‘lift your right buttocks’. Everyone knew what she meant.

I have difficulty pronouncing some words. I don't think it's very obvious to anyone else, I don't sound like I have a speech impediment and I live a normal life. I avoid words I can't say if possible. Maybe this is a word that the yoga teacher can't manage and telling her you want her to avoid "looking daft" probably wouldn't help much.

Go up to her after a class and say 'Such a great class thank you. The supine twists are really helping my lower back pain.'

I had a yoga teacher that kept saying ‘and this will really stretch your thoracic’ and I was just itching for her to finish and say ‘region’. It’s either a thorax, or thoracic region. I stopped going (for other reasons)

No, you’ll look like a dick. My yoga teacher mispronounces a couple of the Sanskrit names for poses. It makes absolutely no difference to my practice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Smartiepants79 · 02/03/2025 20:25

Does it make any difference to how you do the pose??
I would just keep it to myself. It’s unnecessarily embarrassing for her.

GriefSubmittedHighways · 02/03/2025 20:31

Absolutely don't! Possibly you are just mishearing a slightly non-standard pronunciation. But even if you aren't, her mispronunciation is completely incidental to what she is trying to communicate, and it is not causing any detriment to her students.

You would seriously look like a twit if you said anything.

My yoga teacher once mumbled something about the balls of our feet and then loudly said "Grab your balls and pull them apart!" GrinWe knew what he meant so all was well.

I don't think you should correct her, you'll likely embarass her.

My pilates teacher says this. She's American, maybe it's Americanism?

Ah, maybe that’s it. My teacher was British but maybe trained in America.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 02/03/2025 20:44

I’d just keep quiet. What does it matter so long as the love you’re doing is correct.

BountifulPantry · 02/03/2025 20:51

No keep quiet.

It’s a yoga class not an exam.
