I know i missed my exercise class but so what?

I pay in advance for my Pilates class. It is £30 a session
You can cancel the class as long as you give 24hrs notice, if not you lose out.
Quite reasonablely you can't be more than 5 mins late.
On Thursday I had an appointment before my class which over ran significantly, on top of that I encountered three lots of temporary lights and traffic has backed up.
By the time I got to the car park I was 10 mins late. There was no point rushing, I'm late, I've missed out. There isn't a reception where I could have explained this to, just the instructor doing her thing with the group.
I went home.
I got an email which was,imo , quite snotty, telling me i should have let them know if i wasn't going to turn up so they could have given that place to someone on the waiting list.

My feeling is I've paid for that space, whether I was there or not.

If they gave it to someone else they would have had £30 from them as ' as a place has become available '
I wouldn't have got my money back as it clearly says no refunds if you are late or a no show.
Therefore, I feel like the sharp tone of the email is a bit ridiculous. The company hasn't lost out and as far as I can imagine, most people want to turn up and don't deliberately miss classes once they've paid for them.

What do others think?

@PandaTime

Hell no lol. I can't even see my feet.
Hence me spending nearly £200 a month on Mounjaro. In this economy! 😱
At the risk of hijacking my own thread, how are you finding your Mounjaro journey? I don't think i know anyone in real life doing it.
I'm intrigued but nervous about it.

I'm not doing as well as I thought I would. I had hoped I'd be one of those people who gets big losses on 2.5mg or 5mg, but nope. I don't know if I just metabolise it really quickly or if my hormones are so messed-up that I need a massive dose to feel anything. I'm on 12.5mg now and only just starting to feel the effects. I don't really hear many people say they have this issue. Everyone else seems to lose half their body weight in the first month 😭Side effects-wise, I've been fine though. I get sulphur burps for the first few days after injecting and then it settles.

LionME · 02/03/2025 21:01

No but then she knew the appointment over run. She knew it was getting tight.
A quick text to the instructor saying she might be a coupke of minutes late as her medical appointment run late would have helped.

fwiw I never ever think an appointment with a consultant will be on time. Even at 8.00am. I think that was wishful thinking in the first place

IDoWhateverItTakes · 02/03/2025 21:02

IMissSparkling · 02/03/2025 18:46

Well, maybe it's just me who would be frustrated at an arbitrary 5 minute cut off. The OP could easily have slipped in at the back ten minutes into the class without disturbing the others.

My gym won't let you do this for most of their classes because you miss the warm up and they don't want people getting hurt (apparently).

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 02/03/2025 18:37

£30 per session???

My thought on reading the OP was "FUCK ME, ARE THEY KIDDING?!"

We've had to persuade our pilates instructor to put her costs up from £3.50 to £4 as we didn't think she was taking enough home. And she still feels guilty!

Miaowzabella · 02/03/2025 21:03

BlueBlueBerries · 02/03/2025 18:40

I'm a Pilates teacher, it's frustrating when someone doesn't turn up and doesn't let us know. An email out of courtesy is polite to apologise for your absence.

What self-aggrandising nonsense. I wouldn't be apologising because I decide what I do with my time. Once I have paid for the class, it's entirely up to me whether I attend or not. There are many reasons why I might miss a class: traffic, injury, work, or just a better option suddenly came up. The class will go ahead without me, nobody will be inconvenienced, you will get paid, the venue will get their fee and it does not make an atom of difference to you whether I attend or not.

sevenIsNewEight · 02/03/2025 21:05

PandaTime · 02/03/2025 20:50

No, they didn't. The email wasn't written specifically and personally for the OP. It is sent to every no-show and obviously doesn't apply to the people who don't know in advance that they won't be there.

The whole thread is about the fact that the email is obviously ridiculously worded; it tells people off without knowing whether they even deserve it, and generally is too rude for a situation when client has paid for the lesson anyway.

They could phrase it differently - acknowledging that sometimes it can't be helped and things happen at the last moment, but if it isn't the case, they would appreciate a message, as it would allow someone from the waiting list to enjoy the lesson.

BlueBlueBerries · 02/03/2025 21:08

why on earth should she? it’s a crazy process to pay and as long as they are quids in then they can live with it

It was a five minute appointment just to check I'm OK, always has been. There was no reason to think I wouldn't have left the hospital and be in my car by at least 8.30. My class wasn't until 1030. No way would i have thought it would take 2 hrs from hospital to class, across town. Blimey I could get from Manchester to Kendal in two hours!

Why? Their policy on latecomers isn’t an issue, OP agrees with it.

Exactly - sure get snotty if the op is asking for her money back but the op paid- it was her spot, the teacher has not lost anything by the op not being there.

FarmGirl78 · 02/03/2025 21:11

Here's one of my historical Facebook posts about another of the instructor's £3.50 classes.... 🤣🤣

Honestly, £30 a pop is ridiculous!

I know i missed my exercise class but so what?
notacooldad · 02/03/2025 21:12

@PandaTime
I hope you get results soon. It's a lot of money every month to be disappointed.

I used to teach aerobics in 1984 at a local leisure centre. That's how much the classes were then! 😆
Everyone was upset when it went to £3.70!

I pay £30 per month for the council leisure centres (access to all of them and all of their classes and attend 2 pilates classes a week (and other classes obvs) - there is access to multiple yoga, pilates, tai chi etc as well as loads of cardio and strength classes 7 days a week - and they don't get snotty (we get a £2 fine for not cancelling within 4 hours ahead of the class but this prevents people taking spaces which are free for members to book) tbh I would take my business elsewhere

And if the shoe was on the other foot and you were on the waitlist? Imagine knowing someone had that attitude and you really wanted to attend that class.

notacooldad · 02/03/2025 21:22

You started a thread two weeks ago about starting Pilates and said
There's a deal on a 3 month membership that we are interested in and this is for 2 classes a week

puts a different slant on the issue wouldn’tt you say oo?

You've got waaay to much time on your hands.

I know right! 😆
I ended up in a complicated situation! It was a great set up but times didn't suit. I'm not going to the ins and outs of how it got resolved but everyone's happy!

You’d be surprised. In our circles, it’s not been unknown to see participants choosing to go on the piss or what not and be quite public about it online. Or other participants mentioning it in class.

That doesn't make sense, how would they find out? Also, if a person had already paid for a slot, even if they didn't use it, I wouldn't expect to be given it.

I go to Pilates regularly, and we have a similar cancellation policy, and I usually give notice, but if I didn't show up for whatever reason and was sent a snarky email like that I'd be pissed off - they've already got my money,

Bellaboot · 02/03/2025 21:31

Can everyone please stop comparing a group mat Pilates class price to a small group reformer. Those machines start around £4k and training also expensive. The two are not comparable price wise. Reformer standard is £25-£35 per session. Good teachers also need to be paid a decent rate.

Everything is fine and standard about the policies except the email which was unnecessary. I'd say just trying to deter people from late cancellation but not worded in a good PR way.

OP I hope this doesn't put you off and you continue to enjoy your reformers sessions.

Why should she apologise? She paid for the class, so no-one has lost any money. She hasn't created any extra work for anyone (they were not obliged to send a snotty email). She didn't interrupt the class or argue about not being able to take part when she realised she had missed the five-minute cut-off time. And the tutor was not left twiddling their thumbs as there were other people to teach.

I don't think you can have it both ways - you can't expect someone to pay 100% of the cost if they don't make it the class, only have a five-minute grace period, and expect a grovelling apology for any absence.
